Aug 17, 2009 - What a load of shit. Berry Gordy had affairs with numerous women at Motown, none of whom became superstars a la Diana Ross. Ross had the ambition, the work ethic, and a light, sweet, distinctive soprano voice. She was not a belter/gospel shouter (most sopranos aren't) but anyone who doesn't respect her voice should try and sing in her key - not easy.
CrankCase08 Says:
Aug 18, 2009 - jemb2000 - You are the one full of shit. Ross combined ruthless selfish ambition with the opportunity of obtaining the extra mile by prostituting herself with Gordy. Secondly, with regard to her voice, you display ignorance. I don't respect her voice or mediocre vocal abilities but I can't sing in her register (not key!) because I'm a natural baritone! She is merely a microphone crooner; take away the microphone and she'd be lost. I's a 20th century phenomenom.
jemb2000 Says:
Aug 18, 2009 - I'm not denying Ross ambition - I imagine it's a trait she shares with most performers on her level of fame. Again, she wasn't the only woman at Motown to have a relationship with Gordy, so any "prostitute" jibes to explain her success don't fly.
jemb2000 Says:
Aug 18, 2009 - As for voice, Ross's high, light soprano stood out at Motown and on the pop scene in general. As a natural baritone, you must be aware of common and relatively uncommon voice types. Also, volume must mean quality in your book. Ethel Merman performed without a microphone for much of her career - I wouldn't want to listen to her version of Baby Love...
CrankCase08 Says:
Aug 18, 2009 - Ross may not have been the only oneto have an an affair with Gordy, but she would have clearly seen that Gordy was promiscuous with his female stable so took full advantage of it, whereas the others didn't. She oviously knew the score. We weren't talking about Diana Ross, not Ethel Merman. I'd be highly amused to see how far Ross gets without a microphone. She is pretty average and, as an unknown, I strongly suspect she'd not get past X-Factor first round unless she slept with Simon Cowell.
jemb2000 Says:
Aug 18, 2009 - If Gordy slept with numerous women at Motown, why did he favour Ross? He clearly saw her marketability. The man was not stupid - he couldn't have been blinded by sex for that long. As for microphones, all popular music performers use them. I don't see your point there. It's not as if Ross's voice was always double-tracked or buried under a lot of echo...
CrankCase08 Says:
Aug 18, 2009 - All I'm pointing out is that she's not particularly talented. There are a lot better singers that receive nothing like the recognition. Her ultra-close mic technique together with capable studio engineers will rarely require double-tracking or lots of echo. Secondly, she is so full of herself, demanding that she be addressed by her minions as 'Miss Ross'. What an awful piece of cheap conceited garbage.
hmsheppard Says:
Aug 21, 2009 - Diana Ross may have been a whole lot of things she may not have sung or danced as well as some others but you can't deny that she had "it," whatever "it" was. There are performers and there are superstars. Diana was a superstar who could do well in any arena: movies, TV, stage. Those at Motown that hated on her would have done the same thing if they had the chance. Yes, Berry was laying pipe with Diana, but that's a tired ass excuse. He led her to the door but it was Diana who crossed through.
hmsheppard Says:
Aug 21, 2009 - Look, what Berry Gordy did with Motown was an extraordinary feat that will never be duplicated. Yet it was so simple! He took the pimp game that failed him on the streets turned Motown into some REAL pimpin'. Was he not pimp-like? He reaped the benefits of the artists' talents; they received the crumbs. Berry was laying pipe with most of the ladies. Ultimately, Diana was the bottom artist who got to ride up in the front seat. How many of them are dead or broke still on the track right now?

Aug 23, 2009 - Rosalind Ashford voice is huge and loud. Listen to her at the background. Amazing.

Sep 18, 2009 - i remember really enjoying the supremes when i was younger. then i became old enough to read books about their private lives and as a result began to despise diana and berry. but now that i'm older, i realize i never knew any of them personally anyway and i appreciate the talent. for so many talents mixed with a man's drive for success to create the most unforgettable mark in music history is ,well, divine appointment.

Nov 3, 2009 - Don't believ everything you read, The Bitch as you call her, helped Flo out when she could'nt pay her mortgage and set up a trust fund for Flo's kids at 10,000.00 a piece so she can't be all bad.
REALTALKBABYBOY13 Says:
Nov 8, 2009 - but the trust fund was lost and flo's girls never saw a cent
idaslpdhr Says:
Nov 8, 2009 - @REALTALKBABYBOY13 The trust fund wasn't lost, their father tommy chandler got control of it a spent the lot, just like he spent all of Flo's money. she was due to go to the Supremes farewell concert and she gave him some money to buy shoes and jewelery for the show and he went out and blew that as well so she never got to go on stage with the other supremes!!!! He was a nasty piece of work.
