And it makes a point about how sexuality doesn't matter. Dumbledore is an amazing person and he has flaws, but whether he likes girls or boys doesn't factor into any of his talents or flaws. The book series is about fighting bigotry, and Dumbledore, with that bit of info, is a step towards fighting anti-gay sentiment.
