classicalcritic Says:

Nov 21, 2009 - I am aware of the day the music died, but I was wondering; why does he say goodbye to 'miss American pie'? There is probably something on the internets, but hopefully you guys out there can answer my quarrel far more promptly. Thanks

delise54 Says:

Nov 21, 2009 - Don is singing about the day Buddy Holly, Ritchie Vallie and the big Bopper were killed in a plane crash. It was a big loss to America, hence "bye bye Miss American pie". I personally think he threw in some references to JFK too when he said "his widowed bride", and "no verdict was returned" and "the flame climbed high into the night". Could be wrong about that. But this song is magnificently done and only a little less good than "Starry,Starry Night" . Thanks for posting.

delise54 Says:

Nov 21, 2009 - Ritchie Vallens*

AngusRyder Says:

Nov 21, 2009 - I know this songs about buddy holly dying but does anyone else think there could be 2 meanings? Ive listened to this years and I can't help but think there's a message about nuclear warfare as well

arnie123450 Says:

Nov 21, 2009 - It might be farsought but it sounds as if theres a whole story in it about a soldier falling in love while at war? Even still it's a great song and I even learned the text by heart :D. (I prefer this one over starry, starry night)

ToxicKetchup22 Says:

Nov 21, 2009 - The song is basically chartering the history of Rock 'N' Roll from the death of Buddy Holly in a plane crash to when the song was written, which was in the late 70's I think

welcometomylives Says:

Nov 21, 2009 - No one ever remembers the other two musicians that died. RIP Richie Valens and The Big Bopper.

ToxicKetchup22 Says:

Nov 21, 2009 - @welcometomylives Yeah, I was trying to remember their names, but couldn't :L
