Kurt Cobain for example saw the world with his own eyes and it really wasn't a very nice world with unicorns and rainbows. Most of his songs doesn't have a deeper meaning, but they have a feeling and you must have this feeling of.. madness? to transfer it into a song. Da Vinci was genious. And crazy, Bethooven, too.
