Aug 27, 2009 - Isn't 31 a little young for a Grey to go? I heard that their average life span was around 50 - 70 years of age. Does anyone know if he had any health problems or the cause of his passing?

Sep 26, 2009 - he died of some disease apparently called crivicous, the bird picks it's feathers constantly... not because of sadness, but because of the disorder. It also suffers from a much softer beak which is the reason he can easily tell the difference between matters. He is still very smart and a gifted bird. RIP Alex :(
LadyhawkLH Says:
Sep 28, 2009 - I raised African greys for years and never heard of such a thing. It could be I'm behind the times, but I Googled your term and the only hit was this page. The Alex Foundation page still says Alex died of unknown causes. Your symptoms sound more like Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease, which Alex did not have.
