Jun 13, 2009 - It has to do with resonance of the waves. You get standing wave formations which are dependent on the frequency of the sound and the medium its propagating through. Basically sound waves are overlapping. In some areas a peak meets a valley of the wave and they cancel (so no motion) but in other spots a peak meets a peak and you get double amplitude (alot of motion). The grains collect in the no motion areas. As you change the frequency the wavelength changes so the pattern changes.
