Sep 8, 2008 - I am stunned, and filled with admiration. How he ever got through it at that tempo, I'll never know. But he was Gigli! If anybody coud do it, he could. I am surprised he used so much voice on the first half. If ever there were a piece where he would be justified in using that famous Gigli mezza voce, I think this would have been it! But he made it anyway. Bravo, maestro!

Sep 21, 2008 - Mascagni's tempi for this opera were always slower than we hear today, but Gigli did honour to Maestro's music with that voice full of passion and sun and whatever else (excellent use of the passaggio!). Bernstein and Corelli at the Met came close to these tempi. Then there was Corelli... sigh!
