The pressure of the audience and the film crew, allong with subtle manipulation of Derren himself, make that they feel in a dangerous situation. In such a situation there are 2 options: fight or flight. Neither is permitted in a starring competition, so they pomp adreneline (their own chemicals) and keep increasing pressure on themselves. The adreneline fucks them up.

Indeed, so much of what derren does (and what I tried to do, and cannot, and don't care because I'm a scientist not a performer) is IN THE SELECTION. I think you're totally right. That physiological reaction definitely would explain reactions. rad. awesome nice slick clever observation. I think there was a bit of some Hand induction stuff prob too but i think you're right. prob. I don't want to do db stuff though he's good perofmer though.

Nov 13, 2009 - Sorry if this observation has been posted already... I don't have time to read all 1,470 comments. But I noticed that before Derren starts the competition, he touches the shoulder of each man before AND after the starting contest. I believe the touching of the shoulder somehow triggered them to feel ill (he probably hypnotized that group before this was filmed). You'll notice that the second man begins to become very upset and Derren grabs BOTH of his shoulders to calm him down.
