Nov 18, 2009 - Burn? I don't even feel warm right now. But that argument is getting into chicken-and-egg territory. People who aren't WASPs mark themselves as different because they have always been marked as different in this country. Black men in America didn't create the idea that they were inferior to white men. White men in America did, and black men faced centuries of oppression because of it. You'd have to be historically myopic to think that race does not matter in America history.

Still, I think identifying yourself as American and as a hyphenated American aren't two mutually exclusive ideas, in the same way that a man can identify himself as male, American, a conservative and a Cowboys fan without any conflict between those facets of identity.
