Nov 10, 2008 - Pauses in the right places (for example, at commas and periods) sound just fine. Pausing in the middle of a phrase creates choppy (not smooth) speech. It's natural to use "filler" words like UM, UH, and OH when you're searching for something to say, but it does sound worse in more formal situations such as a job interview or a speech.
