Aug 22, 2009 - Probably most of the people here watched this movie as a kid, and to a kid, this was plenty real enough. It's okay if you don't like Emmerich's style, but this wasn't a "dumb" movie, even looking back now. Emmerich's movies also have a lot of character and humor which I guess people may not like in their apocalyptic disaster movies. If things were too realistic, massive destruction probably would just be grim and not that entertaining.

Sep 2, 2009 - How is that bad or stupid? If it's in their best interest, then it is logical to do so. On the contrary it would be stupid to let a potential threat live. Humans do it all the time, humans have killed off most carnivorous predators in human populated areas. Other animals are killed for human consumption or to prevent them from eating livestock. Aliens may not have any reason for respecting life other than their own. Your morals and ethics are not universal constants that apply to all lifeforms.

Oct 17, 2009 - During the making of this film the military agreed to provide anything the filmmakers needed, planes, helicopters, uniforms you name it., but only on one condition. Removal of Area 51 from the script. But since Area 51 is an important part of the story they didn't remove it. So the military withdrew its support. Neverthless it is a great movie. That's why I admire Roland Emmerich.

And by the way, he did not decipher the signal. He just found out that the signal was recycling and gething weaker and that it was a countdown. So your statement is wrong

Nov 19, 2009 - The best movie about aliens attacking earth is Signs, after that War of the Worlds. This might be 3rd. Tho, I gotta admit, I haven't seen that many movies of that category.
