dothejive Says:

Nov 12, 2009 - Thats why I love jive, people dont just watch others dance they get right on in and dance the night away!

lindyhop411 Says:

Nov 13, 2009 - This is not jive. This is Lindy Hop. Jive is the European version of East Coast Swing, and isn't really considered true swing dancing. It's a formal ballroom dance, but the Jive is not something you would have seen on the Savoy Ballroom floor.

dothejive Says:

Nov 13, 2009 - I never said it was Jive...I was just stating the fact that I like Jive better.

lindyhop411 Says:

Nov 13, 2009 - Sorry, I misunderstood what you were saying. That being said . . . This is a competition, hence spectators. Contrary to your statement, there are many ballroom competitions where Jive is watched by spectators as well. Assuming that Lindy Hoppers don't social dance is absurd, in fact the social dancing aspect in the Lindy Hop community is what makes it so popular and addictive. Saying once dance is better is also absurd, because it's just about personal preference.

lindyhop411 Says:

Nov 13, 2009 - But, I will go on record to say that the Ballroom Standard of Jive is by far the uggliest dance I have ever seen, IMHO. As I stated before, it's the European version of East Coast Swing. The dance essentially stripped all of the aspects of the original form of the dance and made it geeky and bouncy, not to mention a 6-count basic for music written in 8-count measures. Essentially, I view Jive as way too "white" for a dance that was created in Harlem.

dothejive Says:

Nov 13, 2009 - And to respond on the "white" issue does not seem like that to me, I have been going to RAB shows for a long time, and the best jivers i've seen are Mexican.

economyones Says:

Nov 14, 2009 - If you were to drum up all the archives of swing from the past century, these "cats" would be close to "equal" the real Harlem kings. This is not just "I got it from text book". This is pure catchem', round'em, twirl'em, eggs gone scrambled and "the house got rambled" Swing At Its Best. Period.

missy1234eva Says:

Nov 14, 2009 - Wow, that is real cool!! I was learning swing, back in Oregon with some guy friends, but I should go back to dancing swing again! i miss it!!

lindyhop411 Says:

Nov 14, 2009 - Are you confusing ballroom jive with "Jivin'"? As in the dance you would find at Rockabilly shows?

areakmilo Says:

Nov 14, 2009 - Excuse me... but anyone knows the name of that song....?????

lindyhop411 Says:

Nov 15, 2009 - That would be "White Heat" originally recorded by the Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra.

elphbrat Says:

Nov 16, 2009 - Please don't be mad! It is something I noticed only today. I was listening to my iTunes and watching this vid without the sound and realized that a song called "House of Wolves" by My Chemical Romance was in sync with the dancing! Of all things! Is anyone familiar with the song? Do they sync up because of a specific beat count used for this style of dancing? I am aware of how skeptical some may be, given the band, but I was impressed. I'd LOVE to see someone do a dance to that song. : )

lindyhop411 Says:

Nov 16, 2009 - Well the songs are not the same beat. The song tempo in the video is about 280 beats per minute, while the song you mentioned is much slower at 215 beats per minute, so there is no way the song and video could "sync" because they are two different tempos. That being said, someone with less experience with swing dancing might see some correlation, but that's all really in the eye of the beholder.

lindyhop411 Says:

Nov 16, 2009 - As for dancing to the song. You can, but I've never seen a routine to it. There was a group of Lindy Hoppers that performed on Dancing With The Stars a few seasons back, and they did a routine to "Dance, Dance" by Fallout Boy. You might want to look up that video.

Dinyctis Says:

Nov 16, 2009 - I love this stuff. It's refreshing to see actual, skillful dancing. Not this grinding bullshit you see in the clubs nowadays.

lindyhop411 Says:

Nov 16, 2009 - The did grinding back during the swing era. It's now referred to as blues dancing, and it dates back to rent parties of the 20's.
