Sep 17, 2009 - The shoemaker-levy impact left a larger scar which eventually faded. The question is what process continues the great red spot. If you're interested in wierd gas giant phenomena, check out the south pole on Saturn. It's got a hexagonal shaped storm on it, weird stuff.

Sep 15, 2009 - Science doesn't work that way, applied uses are often not apparent, or even non-existent. Research has to be done for its own sake - it's wonderful if you can immediately apply it right after, but more often than not it will 'just' provide knowledge.
