Oct 5, 2009 - slavery is wrong. but this song is so utterly incredible! his voice, and the power of this song is stunning. all in all, i absolutly ADORE this musical and im like, in love with john adams! Adams rocks!

avatartbk Says:

Oct 5, 2009 - The song isn't really about Slavery, but about the North's hypocritical stance on Slavery. Still, the song is amazing.

DimeLivesInUs Says:

Oct 8, 2009 - They tried indentured servitude, but there was a large lack of labor. Thomas Jefferson however in this case, for the sake of historical accuracy, treated his slaves like extended family (even referring to them as such), and paid his slaves that held management positions or that did superb jobs.

TombaFanatic Says:

Oct 11, 2009 - The beginning is kind of Ironic.... While negotiating the Treaty of Paris, one of the most important things to John Adams was the fishing rights for New England.

TombaFanatic Says:

Oct 11, 2009 - As great as a leader Jefferson was, and however he treated his slaves, he was a hypocrite in many things of his life. He was against slavery, but didn't free them. He often advised other to never use credit and to live a simple life, but he lived a life a luxury and was in debt through most of it. Great leader, not so great role model.

DimeLivesInUs Says:

Oct 12, 2009 - He did what he could to abolish slavery, like banning the importation of slaves while he was Governor of Virginia.

TombaFanatic Says:

Oct 12, 2009 - Hey, I'm not saying that if he wouldn't have banned slavery if he could. Like I said, he's a great leader and would put aside his personal wants and needs for the greater good of the public. That being said, when he couldn't abolish slavery for everyone, he made little effort to free most of his slaves. This is unlike Adams, who might not have been as great a leader, but if he had any moral problem with something, he would do his best to avoid it personally as well as professionally.

Oct 12, 2009 - This very well might have been my favorite song in the musical. Absolutely love it 3

Fupper16 Says:

Oct 15, 2009 - 8:39 is my favorite verse, a alteration of the original opening line, "Who sail the ships back to Boston..." the chords are so sad, and he is showing how the vicious cycle of slavery repeats itself...I love 1776!

I4gotmyMANTRA Says:

Oct 18, 2009 - "I don't like at all, Mr. Jefferson." Very well delivered line!

breakermw Says:

Oct 21, 2009 - He did free some slaves: the ones he was...ahem....involved with.

Oct 23, 2009 - The musical "1776", on stage and in the movie, was one of the great stagings of American history, with beautiful songs, fine acting, and a truthful retelling of this nation's birth. We should learn from it, and enjoy it. And remember that it's about the American colonies in 1776, not about American society today!

zelliej1 Says:

Oct 27, 2009 - actually, I don't think he did.

TombaFanatic Says:

Oct 27, 2009 - Actually he didn't....he freed the children of the one he was involved with.... He also freed a couple on his deathbed (whether she was one of them I don't know). Also he freed slaves that looked white, and slaves that were skilled at something so they could make it outside his farm. I may have been a little harsh in my earlier statements, he did almost everything he did in the best interest of others, which led to many contradictions.
