Feb 6, 2009 - No, they have to be alive (as in brain activity) people dont go completely braindead just because you open up their skulls...Though if you dont go telekinetic-surgeon (Notice his old med school books in the apartment season1) obviusly they will. I think Tim Kring actually told people about the whole they have to be alive thing. Which is also supported by the fact that he can get powers through empathy ..when people are alive.

Apr 2, 2009 - I don't think that is correct. Peter took Sylar's power and was able to repair that broken watch although he might never have seen a working one from the inside before. In my opinion it is more probable that he needs the watched systems to be undamaged. Every victim but Claire was already dead when he investigated the brain. He could not take Eden's power because of the damage of the bullet.
