Apr 14, 2009 - Calm and soothing entertainment of the early 1960's. Put the b/w tv on in the evening, and the days problems melted away. even though i was only 10 at the time, i remember those relaxing evenings when everything was safe, warm and toasty. This brings back those feelings, even for a few seconds, its worth it,

Apr 18, 2009 - This was my favorite part of the show, too. And it's just as funny, if not more so, all these years later.

May 14, 2009 - well memories like this is one of the good things about 50+. Kids today(anyone under 35) don't remember this ....to them it never existed. I'm glad I was around at the time...it brings back a smile from deep within that was planted long ago in childhood. Thanks for tickling that spot...:)

Jun 5, 2009 - Let's not forget Terrible Temper O'Toole. Today, they might have Parking Meter McDade, LOL.

Jul 17, 2009 - You make a good point about "drunk comics" being out of favor. I don't think we are going to be in for a Foster Brooks revival anytime soon either.
Johnk662561 Says:
Jul 19, 2009 - Actually, "Crazy" wasn't drunk. He was "retarded" or slow, (i.e. "crazy"). His character was that of the "Simpleton with a speech impediment".
ACcountryFan Says:
Jul 19, 2009 - really? he appeared in sketches that took place in a bar...but I've never really seen any factual commentary about the Crazy Guggenheim character that says one way or the other if the character was an alcoholic or slow...I've seen web-sites that say the character was one way or the other but nothing definitive. he's still hilarious whichever the case. Charlie Cantor played a slow character, Socrates Mulligan, on Fred Allen's radio series...he was hilarious. He also appeared on Duffy's Tavern.
sensordev Says:
Jul 27, 2009 - Johnk, thank you for that timely correction. The Crazy Guggenheim character indeed was NOT a drunk. Just like real life you know, where not everyone who hangs around a bar is a drunk, and a few of the regulars don't even drink. Hard as that may be to imagine for folks who know nothing about it, such is life.
pretorious700 Says:
Aug 1, 2009 - Right on brother...I'm with you there.
ACcountryFan Says:
Aug 7, 2009 - then why do people hang around bars if not to drink? surely they can find a meal and soft drinks at other places. since I know nothing of the bar life i'm curious why some that say "i don't drink" or "i'm not a drunk" have a desire to go there in the first place.
sensordev Says:
Aug 7, 2009 - Most people in a bar do drink but 5 or 10% don't. Sociability without obligations, quick cheer if you will. I drink, but my aim was to find ready pool games for small money. You'll see the "Guggenheim" characters there too. They find more tolerance for their odd or slow natures than in many other places. Lots of oddballs in bars, so they fit right in with the crowd. The parents of one such young man wrote a letter of thanks to the place thanking all for boosting his self confidence.

Aug 12, 2009 - I love the old Tom Lehrer line about National Make-Fun-of-the-Handicapped Week..."which Frank Fontaine and Jerry Lewis are in charge of..."
diddymuck Says:
Aug 31, 2009 - Craze was a silly talking guy who had a proper intelligence but talked funny.

Sep 6, 2009 - Pay TV. This is so ahead of its time thats its spooky!
WSenator1 Says:
Sep 16, 2009 - Hate to say it, but I never like the Crazy G. character that much. Frank Fontaine was a very good singer, and seemed like a nice guy the few times he was out of character, but I could have done without him. BTW, Crazy G. was an update of John L.C. Savoney, who appeared on Jack Benny's show from time to time.
johnseeley Says:
Sep 17, 2009 - As a kid, (6-8 years old) Crazy Guggenheim was the part I waited for in the show. When Jackie said, "Craze? Yea, he's in the back...Hey Craze!" My eyes would light up. He made me laugh! Also liked the other skits witht that skit song. I have had that skit song in my head for 45 years and haven't heard it since. La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La, La.
NewMuse23 Says:
Oct 31, 2009 - Boy, this is a blast from the past. As a kid, we used to always watch the Jackie Gleason Show. I too could not wait for the Crazy Guggenheim segment. GOD, this is from when a person didn't swear a blue blaze to be funny. Thanks for a great memory.
