Nov 18, 2009 - joyfulvulture, good point but... wasnt gretzky playing 2x more than players are today?

prasad604 Says:

Nov 18, 2009 - i had a feeling that goal would be number 1, its pure hustle and skill

RaDa67 Says:

Nov 18, 2009 - That may be true... an I'm not arguin if he woulda surpassed gretzky's records... but if Ovie was back in the 80's... he would be the most dangerous player on the ice by far... because a lot people weren't even conditioned then.. an no goalie would be able to handle his wrist shots... ever shot would probably be a goal.

imaphil4life Says:

Nov 18, 2009 - he is just... AWESOME!

joyfulvulture Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - you're an idiot, did you read what i posted? can you do some very simple math?

cobhalfass Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - best goal ever !!! wow

phildek91 Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - @vilzeh The thing is the game was much different, the science behind the game wasn't there, nor was the physical conditioning that is there today. Of course Ovechkin would have been fantastic in any era of hockey, but his points and skill would have been subjective. I'm not ripping Ovechkin, he's my favorite player of all time. But you have to realize the effect that 20 years has on a sport, a lot has changed. Ovechkin is probably the most talented hockey player to have lived.

phildek91 Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - @12PM12 wrong.

vilzeh Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - Of course I understand that, but I just hate how blind these Canadian guys are, just because Gretzky is Canadian they worship him till the end, well yeah, Ovechkin is also my favourite player of all time, well, maybe after Teemu Selanne, but anyways, I didn't like the style of Gretzky, he was good playmaker and such, but I just hated it be cause he never gave a good check, Ovechkin is the perfect package for a hockey player, love it, it's a pleasure to watch him play every night, what a talent!

RaDa67 Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - Yeh I DID you idiot.. I'm not even arguin about an ovie-Gretzky debate.. I'm JUST STATING.. that if ovie was back in the 80's... HIS shot would be too much for goalies to handle.. meaning.. ALMOST every shot would be a goal.

jaredbrown27 Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - a few of those could definitely be replaced by his one against montreal where he spun around the defender and got a sweet one past carey price

joyfulvulture Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - "HIS shot would be too much for goalies to handle.. meaning.. ALMOST every shot would be a goal" lol... ovy wasnt even in the top 100 last year in shooting %. being a puck hog, he just takes a LOT of shots (led the league by far). you're a clueless idiot. keep making dumb, random assumptions with nothing credible to base yourself on.

theWall0719 Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - Ovechkin is an excellent player, definitely one of the best ever. That said, you can not compare eras. Yes, goaltenders and defenders were worse then, but so were the forwards. None had conditioning. Secondly, look at Ovechkins playoff production, it goes downhill. Crosby in my mind is the better player b/c he can lead a team in all situations. Not Ovie. Lastly, let's see Ovechkin dominate goalies like Brodeur, Thomas, Luongo or Mason. Fact of the matter is, he can't!

nfindorf Says:

Nov 20, 2009 - I don't know where you're getting the stats but Ovi's NHL total playoff production is 1.42 ppg (15-15 in 21 games played) vs Crosby's 1.28 (24-39 in 49) This is 4th all-time best result in NHL history after Gretzky, Lemieux and Bossy. The G8's carreer regular season 1.31 points per game ties him 5th in all-time NHL leaders.

nfindorf Says:

Nov 20, 2009 - Goalies back then weren't worse, their equipment was worse. Once designed just to protect goalie's body now it's a tool for protecting the goal. Look how bigger their pads are now compared to that of 1960's and 70's. NHL's average goals per game dropped to 5.8 including OT and is way below 7+ without OT from late 1970's thru early 90's. That's why HNL is now contemplating either change of the goal's size or regulating goalie's equipment.

nfindorf Says:

Nov 20, 2009 - Shooting %.... Oh, boy. This is the least important stats for anybody who's sane. Ask any NHL coach whom he would prefer - a player who puts 3 shots on goal throughout the season and scores 3 with perfect 100% or a guy who puts 500 shots and ends up with 100+ points every season. Besides, Ovi's career S% is currently 12.5 vs Crosby's 14.1, meaning Sidney gets just 1.6 goals more on every 100 shots he makes. Yes, G8 shoots, that's what forwards are supposed to do, aren't they?

theWall0719 Says:

Nov 20, 2009 - @nfindorf : has his team won a cup? Crosby led his team to one. And look at last post season. Aside, from one incredible goal he was completely shut down by the other team's top defense men.

theWall0719 Says:

Nov 20, 2009 - @nfindorf: yes, it is partly the equipment, but they were much worse. There was no technique to their game. Goaltending is almost a science now. Secondly, the protection they wore would disintegrate under today's shots.

theWall0719 Says:

Nov 20, 2009 - @nfindorf: He shoots too much. It works in the regular season, but you saw what happened to his team in the last post season when he was shut down. He cannnot make plays.

joyfulvulture Says:

Nov 20, 2009 - "Shooting %.... Oh, boy. This is the least important stats for anybody who's sane" lol i was answering to a guy who said ovy would've score on almost every shot in the 80s. way to jump awkwardly in a convo and just being off topic like a fool. keep arguing with yourself genius.

joyfulvulture Says:

Nov 20, 2009 - "I don't know where you're getting the stats but Ovi's NHL total playoff production is 1.42 ppg (15-15 in 21 games played" if you think TWENTY ONE games is enough to draw any kind of conclusion then i'm afraid you're an idiot.

nfindorf Says:

Nov 20, 2009 - I responded to theWall0719's statement " Ovi's playoff production goes downhill". Based on all TWENTY ONE games he played, including last season 11+10 in 14 games, it does not. Now tell me, joyfulvulture, are you fucking imbecile? (this is a rhetorical question, idiot, you don't have to answer it)

newfieballer1 Says:

Nov 21, 2009 - ovechkin is an absolute amazing goal scorer but one of his problems is that he isnt a "leader" for his team like sidney crosby is to the pens and if you have ever watched ovie play live. he dosnt move at allll unless he has the puck or someone comes in front of him he can hit.he does not back check , he does not forecheck , i know its not his role , but ive seen himmany times give the puck to the other team and not even try to skate back

RaDa67 Says:

Nov 21, 2009 - I'm not a clueless idiot, fool.. Yeah I know he lead the league in shots.. an I KNOW.. his shootin % isn't amazing.. thanks for pointin out facts I already knew. I'm jus sayin... that if you were to take Ovie's shot from NOW.. an put it back into the 80's... he would be scoring like 3 goals a game, BECAUSE goalie's equipment were smaller, they, I guess you could say, weren't as disciplined then, so they'd commit earlier, an a lot were stand up meaning more space to shoot at. Ov would pick holes.

joyfulvulture Says:

Nov 21, 2009 - lol 3 goals a game... you're just a dumb fanboy man. dont bother commenting anymore.
