Oct 4, 2009 - A good example is just this past week. We were talking about what students were working on for their next paper. One guy is tackling the issue of gay marriage. We had a decent discussion, but I think it would have been more helpful had everyone just shared what was on their heart instead of what was politically correct. As instructor, I somewhat had to play the middle ground and try to create an environment where all sides could share their opinion.

Sep 27, 2009 - That would not work in class. The end of the piece gets pretty graphic. The irony is that the college has non-discrimination policies that are meant to allow the free exchange of ideas. However, they usually do just the opposite. If someone truly does share an interesting idea and someone gets offended, well that type of free speech must be muffled. The effect is that classroom discussions may end up vanilla and uninteresting, because a real discussion about real issues will offend someone.
