Nov 12, 2009 - The only reason why Germany didnt get nuked was because they were pretty much beaten by the time the first nukes were ready for deployement. So Japan got it 5 months latter. But in 1946, USA was still the only country that had nukes, and people really didnt understand what they were. A farmer even wrote the army asking for a small nuke for tree removal. He thought it was bigger TNT! lol

It sounds harsh now, but in the '40's that type of racism was perfectly acceptable. Ever wonder why Japanese civilians (who actually posed no threat) were rounded up and imprisoned while German civilians were free?

Japan wasnt going to surrender because they still had a major army, estimated over 2million in the Japan Isles. We estimated over 1 million allied casualities to force Japan to surrender. Most of the allied Generals/admirals were still not sure that we would win in 1945.

Nov 14, 2009 - You missed the point to my post. Germans and Japanese were viewed differently. It is all moot now, but had the Germans held on until '46 they still would not have been nuked. Just for the sake of argument, there was no need to nuke Hiroshima or Nagasaki. With the war in Europe over, the Allies could have bombed the Japanese back to the stone age. The nukes were dropped for 2 reasons. In the long run it would save Japanese lives and to demonstrate to the Russians the power of the nuke.
