May 10, 2009 - "I know many old gay couples that have been together for 20+ years! " --Wow, an isolated story. That is a personal antidote which is useless in a serious debate. It is only useful for manipulating emotions. "There's also a study that was done that shows kids raised by gay couples are no different from kids raised by straight ones" --Oh really, can you send it over so I can look at it? "your idea of gender stereotypes is unfounded as well. " --How so?
WerewolfOfTheWater Says:
May 10, 2009 - Right, it's so much better to throw statistics from a web site around and simply assume a cause and effect relationship between them than it is to use a real family as a real example in real life. I can't post links in youtube comments, but it's on various health websites, plus the fact that several child welfare organizations have absolutely no objections to same-sex parenting. "How so?" Because there are absolutely no personality traits that are completely exclusive to one gender.
WerewolfOfTheWater Says:
May 10, 2009 - "Are you saying that homophobia is causing gay mean to beat other gay men at a much higher rate then the rest of society?" Seeing as the environment you are brought up in can lead to an inclination to becoming being violent and abusive, then yes, I don't see why this would be impossible.
IssuesAndJustice Says:
May 10, 2009 - "Look at the CDC's website, the same website many anti-gay people use to cite their own sources, it's said there. " --Send me a link...it is a big, big website. "A lot of gays believe in hell, not all of them are atheists." --Right, but they don't believe in a hell that is based on homosexuality so why would they care about comments from others who believe that?
WerewolfOfTheWater Says:
May 10, 2009 - Again...I can't post links in youtube comments, I just know there's a PDF file in the LGBT section of the site. I already explained that to you. You don't have to believe that Hell is real in order to be hurt by the idea of your own family and friends believing you deserve eternal torture for loving another man. (Please don't make me repeat myself again)
IssuesAndJustice Says:
May 10, 2009 - "I can't post links in youtube comments, but it's on various health websites, plus the fact that several child welfare organizations have absolutely no objections to same-sex parenting.' --You can send me a message. Do you know how to do that? "Because there are absolutely no personality traits that are completely exclusive to one gender. " --There are characteristics that are concentrated based on gender. Some of that environmental and some of that is physical.
WerewolfOfTheWater Says:
May 10, 2009 - I could, but I don't particularly feel like getting into a lengthy PM debate, as enough people have been messaging me lately with their spiel. Really, what are they? Do you have proof? Because I've never met anyone who didn't share every one of their personality traits with at least one other person of the opposite sex. Let me guess, cooking skills?
IssuesAndJustice Says:
May 10, 2009 - "I could, but I don't particularly feel like getting into a lengthy PM debate" --I wasn't thinking debate. I was just thinking about getting your links. I have a lot to do today so I can't debate much more. "Let me guess, cooking skills? " --Very funny. How about physical skill for certain sports for men (physical)...or shopping for women (probably more environmental) or murder for men (physical and environmental factor). These are the sort of things I am talking about.
WerewolfOfTheWater Says:
May 10, 2009 - What do physical skills have anything to with RELATIONSHIP skills? Not everyone wants to date johnny the football hero. The only difference between male and female in terms of physical skills is that men can attain more muscle mass anyway due to their hormones. Organs and hormones, and a single chromosome. That's it. I also hate shopping, and I'm female. So you know, good job, you just proved that your entire argument is based on mindless stereotypes from TV.
IssuesAndJustice Says:
May 10, 2009 - "What do physical skills have anything to with RELATIONSHIP skills?" --I was talking about all differences that you would find in ability / personality / desires. "Not everyone wants to date johnny the football hero." --I never claimed that. "I also hate shopping, and I'm female." --Your individual case is not statistically significant. Statistics show that women go out to shop more and ad expenditures especially related to clothing are disproportionally directed at females.
WerewolfOfTheWater Says:
May 10, 2009 - So why do men have to be with someone who enjoys shopping? These "differences" you talk about are not relevant to relationships, and a lot of them aren't even true for MANY people, not just me. The point is, there are no personality traits exclusive to one gender, not any that improve or stop dynamics in a relationship either, so whatever point you were trying to make, it's pretty pathetic. A lot of gay stereotypes are similar to ones of the opposite gender to boot, which also kills your point
WerewolfOfTheWater Says:
May 10, 2009 - How many gay people are you close to in real life? Or are your stereotypes of gay people and women based on what you see on TV and read off websites?
IssuesAndJustice Says:
May 11, 2009 - "So why do men have to be with someone who enjoys shopping? " --I'm a guy and I like shopping. I am against the male norm on a variety of things. I agree...there is lots of variation among people. That said, serious research does show that there are generally differences between men and women in how they think, etc. My point isn't that personality traits are exclusive to gender. I don't think we disagree.
IssuesAndJustice Says:
May 11, 2009 - "How many gay people are you close to in real life?" --I have worked with gays on projects and have have not super close friends that I hang out with that are gay. I also try to go to gay rallies when they are in the area and learn and always have good peaceable conversations and I think I am able to break a lot of stereotypes about people who oppose gay marriage at the same time.
WerewolfOfTheWater Says:
May 11, 2009 - And yet you promote gender stereotypes and stereotypes about gays.
WerewolfOfTheWater Says:
May 11, 2009 - I don't think the differences between men and women and how they think are significant enough to make it so that being with a woman would be so radically different from being with a man of similar personality. If there aren't any personality traits exclusive to one gender, then I don't see the point you're trying to make. The way I think can arguably be perceived as male. I can talk to someone online for several months with them believing I'm a male until I tell them otherwise.
