I also studied for years, believing I needed that paper. But nowadays since the digital age they take any kid of the street with a bit creativity, shove a camera in his hand and let him try to take pics. The bigger companys want a BFA in graphic design and they want to see a portfolio with at lest 12-15 pics of work in it. It is true and kid can learn the software, but without the degree its very hard to get your foot in the door.

If you had an artist without diploma and one with, applying for a job and the portfolio of the one without paper is better, he would be hired in some cases. I just think it's funny, art is mostly the only job were a diploma isn't really necessary in some cases. Because you been born with it or you can learn it yourself. Name me one other job were it isn't always necessary to have a diploma? You know what I'm saying? o_O
