Aug 27, 2007 - Here is where I bless the InterNet: what a joy and a privilege to see / hear those wonderful musicians. Best of all, my "live memory" of gigs 35 years ago has stayed true --- they really were that good. I don't know eher and how these precious clips get loaded to YouTube, but please keep 'em coming!

Dec 11, 2007 - what a great find. i've always thought that "fourth" was underrated. when i was a teenager, we used to lie on the floor and listen to "virtually". when it was over, no one could get up to flip the record. great wyatt!!!

Oct 6, 2008 - Has anyone ever heard 'I used to like Soft Machine but I went off them' I haven't - it wouldn't make sense. There's always something going on in their records. They never play the same arrangement twice. They always changed the lineup. They are the coolest looking band ever. I played all my 70s albums to death at the time. Colosseum Daughter of time - classic album - but I played it so much I can't get anything out of it anymore. You could never say the same thing about the Softs. Always fresh.

Feb 26, 2009 - This makes me wish that Mike Ratledge had played acoustic piano on the finished recording.

Mar 10, 2009 - I gotta download some of those great gems they have at that website. Those Can clips, the Softs, Van Der Graaf. Wish I was older in the 70's . The Softs and stuff like the other bands like Yes, and Tull,Crimson, ELP got me more interested in exploring the jazz world. Then it was off to Davis, and Coltrane, Mingus, McLaughlin( where the average rocker kid starts, when he wants to ditch metal for a spell Ha Ha) Heavy and heady music indeed. Open minds are definitely required.

Jun 18, 2009 - It is exciting...Good, that the french TV people paid so much attention at it...unlike TV stations in other countries then. I adore how serious they worked at the studio, not losing the fun while working..And consider, how young the were in 1970. Besides, the Softs were a none drug band, contrary to the common opinion to many old and new fans...

Jul 15, 2009 - Could you please tell us about that meeting with Ratledge? He's my favorite keyboardist of all time and the mastermind of SF in their greatest period (69-71). And yes, so difficult to find anything about him after SF.

Jul 19, 2009 - Legacy 3 night gig with temp Theo Travis, covering for Elton who died the morning of first gig. Mike turned up following night to chat reminisce with the band. For those who noticed knew who the tall gent was standing discreetly near the back, it was quite a moment. Wishing, I'm sure, like me, he would join in during the second half, play the mini grand that was by the side of the stage. Music for adverts, collaborations, eg, with Karl, etc, has kept the legendary Softs player busy.
bowdlerizer007 Says:
Jul 22, 2009 - why is he your most favorite keyboardist of all time?
sakurak1974 Says:
Jul 22, 2009 - Merci. Quite a moment for sure.
sakurak1974 Says:
Jul 22, 2009 - Lots of reasons. Slightly all the time, the version played at the BBC in 1970, summarizes them.

Nov 13, 2009 - God this is amazing!!! Getting to see SM's most sophisticated hour getting put together. Sad to see how Robert Wyatt's inputs are met largely with nods of apathy, especially considering his replacement shortly after, the utterly inept Phil Howard, and the ensuant decline of this musical franchise. I too would love to hear how "Teeth" would sound on acoustic piano in it's entirety. I can only assume they were trying to steer clear of sounding too "jazz trad". Excellent post! Thank you much!
