Jun 23, 2009 - Boy, the American system is more fucked up than I even knew. Thanks all the same but when I'm 97, I want some rationing and I think most intelligent people would. There's a great hullabaloo in the States about tort reform. What most people there don't understand is that single payer resolves much of that problem because you don't need a court award for future care because health care is provided for unfortunate victims. Lawsuits are an very minor problem in 'socialistic' countries.

Jun 23, 2009 - Yep, pretty damn fucked up. BTW, torts are a big problem mostly because the way they force (or impel) health care providers to practice medicine and give care with the idea that they may be sued constantly in the back of their minds. I have argued that a single payer would have to be paired with tort reform. Does Canada have limits on punitive awards for "malpractice"?

Jun 23, 2009 - LIke I pointed out ..."albermarle"... you're an absolute neanderthal moron. You just reaffirmed my contention. Sorry if I heard your feeling. I understand that in-breeding will do that to you and it's not your fault. So don't blame yourself. Turn in your voter registration card and explain to them that you're too dumb to vote. Believe me ... you're a republican ... they'll understand. Good luck.
stickleyroad Says:
Jun 24, 2009 - I don't believe there are limits on punitive awards but there aren't precedents for ungodly amounts. It tends to be in the hundreds of thousands rather than the hundreds of millions. But as I noted, damages are limited because the national health care system takes care of the victims anyway. I'm not sure tort reform needs to be such a point of contention because it would take care of itself.
RandomMelodies Says:
Jun 25, 2009 - You are correct, because hospitals and doctors are afraid of being sued by emotional family members. We need to let people live/die with dignity. Living wills are a must today. Then a patient can decide at what age to stop excessive care. Those who can afford may want to live as long as possible by any means, but it would be by self choice.

Aug 28, 2009 - Because private insurance are giants and the only giant we have to beat them is our government. That is why we need the government to regulate care so the giants will be forced to follow ethics for once. As for Medicaid, they do a bang up job at only 2-3% overhead, 25% better than private insurance. It is just taxes are slack at the moment why we are in such a deficit, and it did not begin with this administration either.

Jun 22, 2009 - Of course it's rationing (by the system) and you are You are wrong about treating elderly patients. My brother is an ER Doc in New York and has been forced by his hospital administration (and board) to take extraordinary measures and treat patients in their 80's and 90's who are physically and mentally incapacitated. In the latest case the hospital (starting with the ER and moving to ICU) and a well connected family kept a 99 year old woman was ... CONTINUED IN THE FOLLOWING COMMENT
