Nov 1, 2009 - I understand why you get upset. The reason why I get angry at some comments is because there is still so much ignorance stigma about mental illness, from severe 'clinical' depression to schizophrenia etc. Unless a person has real-life experience of one of these illnesses or knows someone who has then they really shouldn't make judgements about people who do suffer from them. They are valid illnesses just like any form of physical illness need proper treatment. You can't just ignore them.

LaFarfalla246 Says:

Nov 1, 2009 - I'd also just like to add that I do have personal experience. A friend of mine committed suicide when he was only 36. He'd suffered from severe depression from his early 20s and had been receiving treatment ever since including hospital stays. This type of illness can affect anyone from any background. My friend was a bank manager of a major bank. A lot of people have the misconception that sufferers are 'crazy' or 'mad'. Not so because many sufferers of severe depression are very intelligent.

LaFarfalla246 Says:

Nov 1, 2009 - I just read your comment from 5 days ago where you state there's no such thing as a chemical imbalance. There is. In schizophrenia it's reduced levels of the chemical dopamine. In severe depression, it's a reduction in serotonin levels that cause a person to become ill can lead to the person becoming so ill they need to be hospitalised. Drugs are used to correct this control the symptoms over time the person, hopefully, improves. It's sad that you felt you couldn't go ask for help.

Nov 1, 2009 - I can't believe there are no comments stating just how horrific this video and procedure are. I'm truly appalled by this. Mad scientist, this guy - not far off from trephining (sic). Thank God for time - it's the only thing that makes people less and less ignorant.

IronicallyVague Says:

Nov 1, 2009 - I don't know.. About a year half ago I suffered either anouther psychotic break or a major breakdown of some kind... it was only then on youtube that I first told anyone what I went thru.. but to answer your statement, yes logically I should be able to seek help. so if in 25 years I go completely over the edge again I will :-)

THETOPZOMBIEKILLER Says:

Nov 2, 2009 - Madness and intelligence aren't the same thing; but still it is true that some mentally unstable people are very intelligent.

THETOPZOMBIEKILLER Says:

Nov 2, 2009 - You are comparing two terms that shouldn't be compared. It is obvious that both physical and mental illness are "defects or conditions that may disable someone" but their source isn't the same. In other words you are saying Burger King and KFC are the same thing just because they are both fast foods (I am using a metaphorical concept).

LaFarfalla246 Says:

Nov 2, 2009 - You misunderstand me. My comments go back approx 1wk so if you read back through them perhaps you'll understand what I'm trying to get across. There is still so much stigma ignorance around this subject where some people who have no real experience of this type of illness label someone as 'mad' or 'crazy' just because they suffer from a 'mental' illness, be that clinical depression, schizophrenia etc. A person who suffers from a physical condition has to take meds to control their condition...

LaFarfalla246 Says:

Nov 2, 2009 - that is considered acceptable by everyone because that's what you have to do if you have high blood pressure/diabetes/asthma etc. A person who suffers from a 'mental' illness also has to take meds to control their symptoms but still in many people's eyes, that is seen as unacceptable or they think the person is weak or just can't cope with life. Both physical mental illnesses are valid conditions deserve to be treated equally. Mental illness can affect anyone, no matter your background.

westfootball32 Says:

Nov 6, 2009 - Parkinson's also comes from lack of dopamine

LaFarfalla246 Says:

Nov 7, 2009 - Yes I know that a reduction in dopamine levels is also a factor in Parkinsons which is a physical disease. The human body is amazing. If things aren't right within it itself, that can lead to so many different things eg: a severe urinary tract infection can cause an elderly patient to become increasingly confused they talk gibberish making no sense at all. This can lead a Dr to think of a possible diagnoses of dementia until blood tests prove that it's the infection that's affected the mind.
