Nov 12, 2009 - imdb says that Jerry Goldsmith's original score was replaced by Tangerine Dream to appeal to a target audience i.e. children, thus Ridley Scott's original film was perverted just to sell...disgraceful.
TheCripplerChick Says:
Nov 12, 2009 - I would say the same of Goldsmith's music. It's loud, brassy and the constant use of choirs doesn't seem to suit the simple, low-key story. Goldsmith's score, and not Tangerine Dream's, is the one that overshadows everything in my opinion.
TheCripplerChick Says:
Nov 12, 2009 - Scott himself has been quoted as saying that if he had the film to do over he'd add "more rock-and-roll." I'm uncertain what this means in relation to his opinion of Goldsmith's score, but, from a musical standpoint, I think the US cut is closest to what he was trying to do. Therefore calling the one with Goldsmith's music "the true Ridley Scott film" seems a bit odd.
TheCripplerChick Says:
Nov 12, 2009 - I respect Scott's intentions as director. But the director isn't always right. Besides, as I said above, Scott clearly says in the documentary on the DVD he would've added a more rock-and-roll soundtrack, something pretty different from both existing versions.
TheCripplerChick Says:
Nov 12, 2009 - This, I think, comes closest to explaining the main difference between the two movies. The American cut has the superior score (in my opinion), but, from a storytelling standpoint, it's pretty watered down. People really ought to focus less on which soundtrack is better, and point out the real reason this version isn't as good: the cut scenes.
magicbyjordan Says:
Nov 12, 2009 - I agree with the cut scenes argument as well, I was focusing on the soundtrack because it seems that was the issue in these comments, basically I just don't approve when the producers of a movie decide to add a different soundtrack literally because the want to target an audience, and I get really tired of the flute in this version haha
darklinkx25 Says:
Nov 12, 2009 - Thank you. I agree, I also prefer the Tangerine Dream soundtrack. I only wish the Director's Cut version included the American score.

Nov 14, 2009 - Where can I find the original one on DVD? I don't think the one I'm watching on DVD right now is it....
LeVaughnX Says:
Nov 14, 2009 - Hah nope mine is definately not the original...It skipped the intro scene and the scene at 3:47 here. Mine went straight to Darkness talking to the goblin.

Nov 15, 2009 - If you read the Williams Hjortsberg original draft, it was meant to be very large scale. Something on along the lines of "Lord of the Rings." The issue was how to make a movie that large and with so many issues with fiming it, the film became doomed from the start. The original cut, however, was so much better story wise. I also love both scores but I have a certain afinity towards the Goldsmith score even though his style--dramatic cuts in themes into other themes--I was never fond of.

Nov 18, 2009 - i see that most people are focusing on the soundtrack, thats one part that stands out an the other is (in my opinion) how much they changed Jack. i also feel they took away from Lilly's character in the Director's Cut. an whether people agree with me or not music plays a huge part in a movie. it sets the tone an pace, can u imagine watching The Fountain without the soundtrack they had???
TheCripplerChick Says:
Nov 18, 2009 - I can imagine not watching The Fountain at all since I've never seen it.

Nov 22, 2009 - WHAT THE F IS THAT DANG MOVIE??? IT HORRIFIED ME WHEN I WAS 8, WHEN IT WAS ON TV??? IT'S SO DANG WEIRD!!!!!! Especially when Goblins ate from a table of food, and a dancing cloth. But I think it's more scarier than "Troll." This is a very weird part: 3:27

Nov 22, 2009 - they spent a fortune on the special effects for this movie mainly due to the fact that the human hero, tom cruise was smaller in real life than the dwarves and fairies and that just didnt look right.

magicbyjordan Says:
Nov 12, 2009 - PS this may upset some, but in my opinion Tangerine Dream is consistently too overpowering for this movie, many of the subtleties portrayed by the actors are overshadowed by the music, and at times the movie becomes more audio than audio-visual, have fun with this version, but if you want the true Ridley Scott movie, watch the directors cut.
