Stacking makes injured Mutalisks harder/impossible to pick out and kill, and also, a stack of Mutalisks can attack and pull out as a single unit, whereas a fanned out group of Mutalisks would get into range at different times, forcing the earlier ones to wait for the later ones to attack, before the group can pull out, exposing them to more damage.
