Oct 29, 2009 - Minimum wage is important to keep people from getting taken advantage of. The reason a lot of jobs are sent oversees is because in other countries they force people to work, even children, for enough money to make slavery look more attractive. Yeah, you're right, we can't compete, and we shouldn't try to because it is inhumane.
hellodollymh Says:
Oct 30, 2009 - You make a good point. Many of the standards oversees are inhumane. But, to get back on topic, I would rather have the jobs here than there. People woudnt be forced to work these jobs, because your right the pay sucks, but most Americans need these jobs right now for some form of income. There are a lot of unemployed people in this country who want to work. There just arnt any jobs.

Nov 7, 2009 - It is not the governments responsibility to make sure you get paid enough to survive, that is on you. Many of us go through difficult times financially. I sure as heck did. I couldn't survive so I got two roommates, kept to a strict budget, and planned out cheap meals to make it (it really sucked). I wasn't making enough so i looked for another job and busted butt to learn new skills and got promoted in 3 months! No degree, no prior skills, just hard work. If I can do it, anybody can!
SSSIappy138 Says:
Nov 7, 2009 - In times like these when unemployment rate is high, the ONLY jobs many people can find are at fast food joints and similar jobs that pay minimum wage. You may have had a tough time, but think how much tougher if McDonalds was able to pay you four bucks an hour before taxes. People can't afford to live on less than minimum wage, especially when the cost of necessities keep rising. If you don't like the government setting a minimum wage, then go to mexico or many countries where you work 60+ hours
SSSIappy138 Says:
Nov 7, 2009 - a week and can't even afford adequate food or clothes for yourself or family. The government is an important part of any great country and there are certain matters that have to be regulated. Everyone goes through tough times and you're not special, but that doesn't mean people should be taken advantage of when their willing to work.
wheelieguy Says:
Nov 8, 2009 - Slappy, the problem with minimum wage is that as the wage goes up, so does the cost of everything else so the wage increase is negated. If you want to see a turnaround in this economy and the jobs coming back from overseas, have the FairTax passed. This will stop corporations from being taxed and will put more people to work for good living wages. Read the FairTax book by Neil Boortz.
SSSIappy138 Says:
Nov 8, 2009 - Lol, Lincoln started the Federal Income Tax, the U.S. Income Tax, and hte National Banking Act. Doesn't sound like something a current day republican would do. Abe believed in progressivism, that's why a lot of the people at the time thought he was moving too fast, spending too much money on reconstruction. They thought it would work itself out, like modern day republicans.
wheelieguy Says:
Nov 8, 2009 - You couldn't have stated it better! No matter what size the cell, when the egg and sperm are merged and life begins, these cells do respirate just as an amoeba or any other single celled life form does and scientists consider these creatures to be alive.
hellodollymh Says:
Nov 8, 2009 - @SSSIappy138 The federal income tax was started under Wilson. The tax has grown increadibly since. When it first started it only affected like 1% of the popluation and they wernt taxed much. Im positive of this. Lincoln may have created something similar, but it was purely for the war and ended after it. Abe was no progressive in modern terms. For that matter pretty much everyone before FDR could not be called that republican or democrat. Lincoln is a right-wing extremist by todays standard
SSSIappy138 Says:
Nov 9, 2009 - Are you talking about the flat tax rate, where the poor people pay the same percentage as billionaires?
SSSIappy138 Says:
Nov 9, 2009 - It was changed to a progressive scale under Lincoln in 1862. Abe was progressive, as was the Republican party when it first started.
hellodollymh Says:
Nov 9, 2009 - Look, I know that it was started under wilson. Im positive. Like I said Lincoln may have created something similar, but it was to pay for the civil war. Im sure it was scrapped afterwards. he would be terrified at how much the system has grown since. Even under Bush these taxes are way to high. Lincoln was not a progressive by any modern standard. It shames me to say this, but he would get sick to see how liberal the so-called conservative party has become today.
hellodollymh Says:
Nov 9, 2009 - I'd like to see something similar to a flat tax, though I do believe taxes should be a little progressive. My idea would be something around 20%. I would exempt the very poor from this system, but overall more people would have to pay taxes. Only half of americans pay federal income. I dont like that system because it polarizes a whole chunk of americans to increasr the tax rate that they themselves dont have to pay. It leads to a welfare state.

Nov 18, 2009 - . . .yes, and Teddy Roosevelt was probably the greatest environmentalist President of all time, but that was OVER A HUNDRED YEARS AGO!!! And all the Rebel states are now Red States and the Union States are all Blue States! The world changes and politics and social issues change right along with it.

Nov 18, 2009 - I don't know about you, but I like the direction Roosevelt and Truman took us in. We won the cold war, we're the greatest economic and military power the world has ever known, and the sky's the limit!

Nov 19, 2009 - FDR did things that were unconstitutional. TR did as well by proposing Universal Healthcare and expanding government WAY beyond the reach the founders intended. You LIKE having the government intrude into your life and tell you what you should eat, drive, and drink?

Nov 19, 2009 - Oh did they? Just cause they're against giving their hard earned money to retarded government programs that build shitty houses for poor people makes republicans bad on such issues? And also, there are much better ways to solve health care then just throwing it in the hands of the government. Personally I would rather be in debt the rest of my life than have the government in control of my health.

Nov 21, 2009 - right on, the democrats are definitely not in the pockets of lobbyist and big corporations. sure obama's cabinet is filled with lobbyist but there the good kind. also those bailouts passed under obama to AIG, goldman sachs and European banks were in the best interest of the poor minorities in this country. sure America rose with free market capitalism since 1776 but i think its time to put our lives and trust in the government, they should raise taxes because they spend our money better than us

hellodollymh Says:
Oct 29, 2009 - Allow me to explain that more. The percentage of employment among teenagers has decreased rapidly. The reason this is, is because it is a way of increasing wages and lowering competition. Also if you wanted to create jobs, eliminating the min wage would be the best thing to do. Forcing employers to pay a certain amount is leading to these employers sending the jobs oversees. You should read Freidman if you want to understand why I feel this way. Their too many reason why i hate this.
