Jun 28, 2009 - Thanks so much for posting this. We were standing on the sidelines, and must have been just north of you, as we were also close to the big Pride flag at the 519. It's great that the trans community is getting some visibility. I don't think people realize how many trans people are out there, let alone how marginalized they are.

Jun 28, 2009 - Most excellent! I'll be there marching next year (my brother was in the hospital and I had to be there for him that day), proudly, with my trans brothers and sisters!

Jun 28, 2009 - Thank you for posting this!!! It's great to have a video to mark the momentous occasion of the first every Toronto trans march. And it didn't hurt that I spotted myself in your video. :) Thanks!

mamadyke Says:

Jun 29, 2009 - Just a note. It should read Toronto's first "Trans" or "TS/TG" and not just transgender. That's why the signs you see in the march say Trans. I understand as a gay man you may not know the various differences but there are many.

Jun 30, 2009 - Last I checked, Transgender/TG is an umbrella term that encompasses TS/TV/CD/DQ, etc., and is what "Trans" is short for. Did this change sometime recently? I'm curious now what TG means to you, since you said "not just transgender?"

ValkyrieRaven Says:

Jun 30, 2009 - I'm glad I made it - I had the most awesome time during the March and it was such a diverse turn out. Happy Pride everyone!

ValkyrieRaven Says:

Jun 30, 2009 - Rockchick2112: "transgender" is an umbrella term and that is part of the problem. There are very different issues between someone who is cross-dressing, as opposed to someone who is transitioning and often people don't want to be shoved to the side, which tends to happen when you're stuck under an umbrella. As a dyke, I know that I would be unhappy being assimilated under the "Gay" banner, which generally refers to gay men, as opposed to having my own identity, as a queer woman. Cheers!

mamadyke Says:

Jun 30, 2009 - Simple. TG short for for transgender is very much an umbrella term which includes but is not limited to, those who cross dress, those that are transvestites, drag preformers, gender queer, gender fuckers, LBG people who are transexual, LBG people who are intersex, two spirtit, men who sleep with men, women who sleep with women, people who sleep with both genders, people who are polysexual, effeminate men, butch women and so so many more.

mamadyke Says:

Jun 30, 2009 - As such using an umbrella term reduces the issues faced by those people who are transexual, including medical, custody etc. As for Trans, it has been used by fo years now as a semi comprimise in general speak, and as one could see by the banners, it very much is the term used here.

rockchick2112 Says:

Jun 30, 2009 - So, I'm still confused why "TS/TG" would be better than "transgender," since TG stands for transgender and thus would be describing the exact same group of people? I could see an issue if you were saying this event was meant to be TS specific, not general TG...but its pretty clear from the organizers' Facebook that "everyone who is under the Trans Umbrella is welcome"?

Omnimodus Says:

Jun 30, 2009 - It is my opinion that the struggles of other transgender folks who aren't TS shouldn't be downplayed either. I see no issue here with labeling this a transgender march.
