Voldemort had to possess Harry in order to protect himself from Dumbledore. In the movie they made Dumbledore very good but still inferior duelist, whom Voldemort decided not to kill for unknown reason.

He does however have Voldemort on the retreat during the wands locking...he stops the fire serpent, he half-drowns voldemort and he withstands that torrent of dark energy... I would say voldemort looked inferior because he had the advantage of being on the attack and still none of his spells succeeded, also he was clearly struggling against the effects of dumbledores spells.

Nov 1, 2009 - Yes i read the book a couple days ago and i was waiting for V to shout "avada kadavra" at Harry and a statue blocks the spell from reaching harry. Also fawks was supposed to show up and swallow another avada kadavra beam.
