Sep 15, 2009 - perhaps it is harsh to say that it is DYING ..... but it is only spoken by the Orthodox (in US and Israel) .... and by older people. The modern language of Israel is Hebrew .... (which was the Language of the Jewish people several thousand years before Yiddish)

Sep 16, 2009 - Beautiful! I have a yiddish dictionary!

I'm 34, not orthodox and I understand (not like a native) and like very much this ancient language. Thank´s for the post from Chile!

Sep 19, 2009 - a git yur all of you! (good new year 5770) yiddish is very alive in communities around Europe/USA/Israel and other locations around the globe where you have (mainly) Jewish communities, from Mumbai to Antwerp via Johannesburg,New York, LA, Miami and so on!! very juicy funny language with its black humor and ways of saying things that you couldn't translate in other languages to have the exact meaning of the phrase. thanks this is cool

wannasee16 Says:

Sep 25, 2009 - Yiddish isn't dead at all. It's very much coming back to mainstream usage. Many Torah-observant Jews speak this language in everyday use, and reserve the holy tongue only for Torah study. And, because the Torah-observant Jewish population is growing rapidly, the usage of the language is increasing as well.

DeStijlBorn Says:

Sep 26, 2009 - erm, you only have to watch the shit cinema, produced by that posh twit who was married to Madonna, to be aware of how yiddish has become part of the black market vernacular of gangland England. Oy gevalt, not again.

mirawayne Says:

Sep 27, 2009 - you wrong!!! this is the song that my father sang to us when we where little,Post war in Poland we had a Jewish schools where Yiddish not Hebrew was the lingo thought .We are not Orthodox but we all speak Yiddish and there is a lot of us.

mirawayne Says:

Sep 27, 2009 - in Poland at Jagiellon University there is a course for students who wont's to learn all about the Yiddish and Hebrew and they have 35 students and 90% are not Jewish and they study Lingo, culture, religion to become maybe teachers of Yiddish and Hebrew and they are not Jewish!!!

BratWody Says:

Sep 27, 2009 - So?? i co z tego, komu chcesz udowodnić, że nie ma racji, moja matka z Polakami (*sic!) chodziła do żydowskiej szkoły, ale są tacy co wiedzą lepiej, niech jadą do oświeconej Francji np gdzie antysemityzm jest powszechny wśród ludzi.

PsyAViewer Says:

Oct 2, 2009 - Albie Diner, you are performing mitzvot in making your Yiddishe videos! To all people: traditionally, Jewish children were introduced to learning by being given a tablet of the apphabet smeared with honey. They licked off the honey and uncovered the mystery of the written word. Aleph, bais, gimel, dalet.... Learn, children. And remember, all people of good will, Never Again, never again for Jews or for any oppressed people. Knowledge is power. HaShem -- the Name, as we call G-D, is Love.

PsyAViewer Says:

Oct 2, 2009 - As others have noted, it means by the hearthside, the fireplace, the oven.... The warmest place in the house, where the children can study comfortably. "In the oven burns a fire, and the house is warm, and the teacher teaches children the alphabet (the aleph-beis)...." Value knowledge. It leads to love and freedom.

hdiylove7 Says:

Oct 3, 2009 - Thanks!

Nov 9, 2009 - mirawayne Very true. We all use Yiddish words, thinking they are just English slang ...LOL. yes it's hilarious when Jews haters use Yiddish. Especially the Jew haters that say they can spot" a Jew. Got to laugh at that since there really is NO Jewish "look". Jews come in all sizes, shapes and colours :)) Read "The Mascot". About a Jewish kid. Stupid nazis didn't know he was Jewish. Considered him the "Ideal Nordic" specimen he was made a poster child for the SS. Stupid nazis ...LOL.

Lagolop Says:

Nov 9, 2009 - mirawayn Believe me, I am on your side but I have to disagree when you say there are no Yiddish swear words. I can give you loads of examples and there are some great zingers. Lots of colourful and really funny phrases in Yiddish. I love it and am trying to learn it. I know some non Jewish Swiss and Austrians that can understand Yiddish perfectly, as Yiddish is very close to Schweizerdeutsch .I have a link to an online phrase book that is pretty good.
