Bobb9999 Says:

Nov 18, 2009 - "Them good old boys were drinking whiskey rye" No Don!Don's spreading booze disinformation!Because Rye IS whiskey! There are 3 basic types of whiskey:American (corn)whiskey,Scotch(barley)whiskey, Canadian(rye)whiskey. Sorry Don," drinking whiskey rye" doesn't make much sense. It's like saying " drinking wine and chardonnay", a dumb phrase,as chardonnay IS wine( a white wine from chardonnay grapes)! If you're going to write a multi-million selling hit, at least get your facts straight!

Vaccine001 Says:

Nov 18, 2009 - How come Don Mclean doesn't get sued for copying American Pie the movie. Cos i swear that he's just copied the name of a movie and came out with a song about it, without even compensating the producers of American Pie the movie. This is an outrage and Don Mclean should be SHOT!

Vaccine001 Says:

Nov 18, 2009 - if you're 12 years old don't make it ridiculously obvious that you copied all your knowledge from wikipedia!

thfedexguy Says:

Nov 18, 2009 - hello shit for brains...you're kidding...right? This song came out in the 70's...

7tnorris Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - LOL you guys are cracking me up with your comments. Actually when this song came out we thought he was saying "whiskey and wine" and didn't figure out that it was Rye until later. Its all just artistic licence for a rhyming word dudes. The comment about him copying the song from the movie was awesome too. The original studio cut is much better than this one - he was a little worn by this time. PEACE BROTHERS!

7tnorris Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - You forgot one Bobb. I am a whiskey man from way back and can tell you that you forgot the best whiskey in the world: Irish. Two more side notes: Scotch Canadian are spelled whisky, and American whiskey is split in two catagories: Tennessee whiskey and Kentucky Bourbon. Thanks for pointing out that rye and whiskey are the same though. I argued with people for years about that the stupid song too. (BTW this version sounds like crap.)

Vaccine001 Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - No one gives a shit about whiskey, its all about vodka and beer

Bobb9999 Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - Good pt. re. Irish.I might have better categorized Whiskey(I like this spelling, which is quite acceptable here in Canada-which explains why I took up this Rye issue with Don in the 1st place!) into 3 groups, not based on country of origin, but on grain used. -On another A.P.vid thread I voice my 2nd beef with the song:the "sundae skool" religious sentimentsDon's agitation over the Stones' "Sympathy for(u-know-who)". Relax Don,it's just a rebelliousRRsong! Catchy one though.Guilty pleasure!

Bobb9999 Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - I think he probably knows that was joking. Still, he deserves an insult, after he insulted me as a supposed "12 -year old" on "Wikipedia'! I'm happy to take the high road above the fray, let others get him back on my behalf (thankyou)! Seriously though, I imagine the studio that made the movie "A.P." likely paid Don M. some bucks for rights to use the song title as their movie title. -That song must have bought Don family a lot of cornflakes over the years.A goldmine!

Bobb9999 Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - Well Jack Daniels has been a RR fave for decades, so whiskey was a good choice of drinks for Don to choose for his "RR history" song, even if you don't happen to drink it. Janis Joplin Led Zep were just a few of many RR Jack fans.Famous photos show a smiling Jimmy Page, a smiling Janis clutching half-empty bottles of Jack...Free advertising beyond the JD company's dreams! [ no, I didn't find this on Wikipedia!]

7tnorris Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - Vodka and beer??? Vac! That is what I drank when I WAS 12! Dude, ya gotta shoot the whiskey. Buy the good stuff (not that cheap ass piss) and clear your palate with spring water before the slam. When you are seriously partying, just remember the old proverb: "Beer before liquor, never been sicker. Liquor before beer, youre in the clear". Peace.

7tnorris Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - True Bob, Jack Black was real popular with the bands. There are all kinds of whiskey 'stilled in the states of course (including rye blends) but American Pop Culture was (and is to a lesser degree) split between being "a Jack Daniels man" or a "Jim Beam man". Scotch drinkers in America tend to be thought of as elitists despite the popularity of it. Then there are the more sophisticated "Crown types" hehe - j/k - I like Canadian too. I like 'em all!

7tnorris Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - Whats up with everybody disrespecting Wikipedia anyway?? I am a long time Wikipedia editor and I think comments like that should be taken as complimentary! Cut paste away, brothers! It's all good!!

Bobb9999 Says:

Nov 20, 2009 - This booze trivia's been entertaining, educatonal even! Cheers, mate

Nov 22, 2009 - dons guitar is so out of tune its so frustratng

xcisinsane Says:

Nov 22, 2009 - Yeah, you're right. Maybe he didn't have enough time to tune it right. I love the part when he says "the players tried to take the field, but the marching band refused to yield." Obviously I'm a band geek. I love this song. You should listen to "Starry Starry NIght". It's such brilliant poetry. it makes Vincent Vangoe's pictures come to life.
