Nov 22, 2009 - The "brown log" is a microphone in a foam windshield. This was back in the days when film and sound were recorded on separate machines and had to be re-synchronized later. The sound recordist hits the microphone in shot so that the editor has point at which the sound and picture feature the same distinctive event that can then be used for synchronization. It is fulfilling the function usually performed with a clapper board. Sadly we get very little of the sound and what we do get is indistinct.
