Apr 13, 2008 - I agree. As a Catholic, I separate my views from these of the books and I try to look at them purely literarily. I think people should read books for Literary value. And if they agree with his views, agree with them. If you disagree with them, let it be. I know that Christians/Atheists have squared off as mortal enemies but seriously. As moral people, please just... stop arguing. Yeah, you people completely disagree with each other. Get over it, live peacefully. Lighten Up.

Jul 21, 2008 - MY TURN TO SPEAK if at the very least this story shows you to question religion and not just go along with it just cuz its written in a book u should find out for ur self the meaning behind it all. u might find ur in the wrong place or you might find a better understanding of your own religion what ever it may be (i feel smart hahaha)

Aug 31, 2008 - Freedom of speech does not give anyone the right to write racist things about others. He is simply a scared, unkind man, who has to question everything he is told. How can giving Lyra's father a Jewish name, and her mother no kindness, not be saying that Jews and Christians are bad. He doesn't even know anything about Jewdaism, so how can he right those things. Furthermore, his an author, he does not have a dagree in philosophy. How can he go around teaching what he believes to teenagers!!!!
cbak12sg Says:
Sep 3, 2008 - It's called freedom of speech, or does it only exist in your terms? By the way, you should read the books properly before making such glib remarks. In the story, the characters learn about love, compassion, kindness, and that includes Lord Asriel and Mrs Coulter.

Sep 5, 2008 - It's just a fun book to read. I don't see why people get offended. If they find the book or himself offensive then don't read his books or watch him in interviews. It's pretty simple.
Beerynose Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - I agree will you. I was struck by the anti Jewish sentiment in the books especially using the name metatron for Enoch in the third book. I think what is so offensive about these books is the fact they are pitched at the young. They do not open the issue of faith up for open debate they are totally bias against belief in God at all.

Sep 20, 2008 - hear hear im as atheist as it gets! these r my favourite books because at every turn of the page, theres a philosophical issue about our lives, societies, human nature the human condition which you can either treat as prophetic, heretical or absolute genius.. but you can take it or leave it, knowing that it is just a story. and a good story is the best thing in the world. as long as you appreciate it for its wonderful imagination and literary complexity craft.. same w/ the bible, i guess..

Oct 31, 2008 - the book is not about the constrictingness of religon, it is about constrictingness itself religon just happens to be a very good personification of it when it used to be like that he is just an atheist who does not like religon and likes to express his openion that does not make him a bad guy

Dec 25, 2008 - First off did you even read his books? Mrs.Coulter and Lord Asriel Sacrifice themselves for Lyra in the end for the greater good for freedom. Also Asriel is atheist and Mrs.Coulter becomes one in the end.

Apr 1, 2009 - In the books, actually, they are inspirational characters, and ultimately sacrifice themselves for her. To let her live. I think you should read the books before you make remarks like that. And just because people have Jewish names doesn't meant that they're Jews! I have a Norse name. That doesn't mean that I go around hacking people with axes and wearing winged hats! cbak12sg, you are very right.

Mar 21, 2008 - and I must say I love hdm, even if I did not agree with some things. The books are great because they speak of love and beautiful things. That´s all that matters; good values. And dont be stubborn and believe innocence is just one thing. Innocence is not blindness. Is wanting noble things and trying to get them in a honest way. Its not being hippies and believing everything that youre told is ok. That is stupidity.
