Nov 15, 2009 - There's a hostility on the part of worldly, educated persons toward dogmatic religions, and their unproven, unjustified authoritarian claims. As there should be.
SteevK69 Says:
Nov 15, 2009 - Why does the GOP, and it's propaganda arm, Fox "News" pander to the Christian Right? Because once you buy the "big guy in the sky that sees controls everything you say do" - you'll buy ANYTHING! I'm agnostic: IF there is a God, would he be impressed by your fawning prayers? Could you fool God by praying on Sunday, and HATING the rest of the time? Hannity/Beck/BillO et al, seem to think so! ..

Nov 16, 2009 - if you could respond coherently to the "same stuff" maybe it would go away. my "whole point" is that whatever god you do believe in, once you understand why you do not believe in OTHER gods, then you will understand why I do not believe in yours. I don't have to know who or what your god is to say that "when you understand why you dismiss all other possible gods, then you will understand why I dismiss yours." Because you DO, as you have said, believe in a god.
karlmahlmann Says:
Nov 16, 2009 - Hannity is making some good points here. The universe could not have caused itself. The guy he's arguing with really fails. He claims that the universe isn't so great because we might be the only planet that supports life and most of the species are extinct. What kind of argument is that for atheism?? lol Is he really saying a compassionate God wouldn't let dinosaurs become extinct. He must be the most sensitive and caring man on earth lol
Princeofpot420 Says:
Nov 16, 2009 - God is an asshole, a bigot, a jelous and overbearing fool. When something goes right its gods will, when something goes wrong, he works in mysterious ways. come on ppl, god is no more real than santa claus, the only difference is that children grow up, adults do not
Needham90 Says:
Nov 17, 2009 - God must be really insecure; he has to have the entire human race kneel before him or he throws a hissy fit!
caelestis356 Says:
Nov 17, 2009 - "The universe could not have caused itself." Why does the universe need a cause? The god hypothesis calls for god to be the "causeless," so he can be the cause of the universe. Why not just cut out the middle man and postulate that the universe has always existed in some form or another?
karlmahlmann Says:
Nov 17, 2009 - That's a really good question and the concept of an eternal universe has always been a tenet of the no-creator hypothesis Literally, that was always the answer to the question "then where did all this come from?" Answer: "It has always been here" - until, of course, we found out the universe had a beginning (as in "in the beginning") about 15 billion years ago. So logic and science demands that the universe is an effect that must have a cause.
caelestis356 Says:
Nov 17, 2009 - Actually, I'm going to back up a bit. I made some assumptions which were based on the first law of thermodynamics, but it's debatable whether the big bang (or quantum physics, for that matter) actually follows this law. But it sort of doesn't matter, because under either hypothesis you have to accept that at some point their had to have been a causeless action or "thing." Your hypothesis postulates that God is causeless, so it's still nothing more than a middle man.
karlmahlmann Says:
Nov 17, 2009 - I agree with much of what you are saying. A minimalist definition of God is simply: the cause of the universe. and that would have to be eternal and, therefore, without cause itself. I'm a Christian.
caelestis356 Says:
Nov 17, 2009 - Something else to think about: Causality cannot exist without time. For an event to cause another event, it must precede it in time. ~15 billion years ago is the point (which is really more of a shady gray area) where space-time began, which means before that point/gray area there was no such thing as causality. Moreover, God as "eternal" doesn't really mean much, because time had no meaning and didn't exist before ~15 billion years ago.
karlmahlmann Says:
Nov 18, 2009 - That is a little paradoxical but the alternative is even more paradoxical, that the first event gets to happen without a cause. And I agree with your "eternal" comment. "Timeless" would be more accurate. Mathematics is also timeless and and never did not exist.
Distortion0 Says:
Nov 18, 2009 - I don't see having one segment devoted to opinion as being a problem. O'Reilly and Beck devote their entire shows to opinion and don't bother labeling it as such. What is your fixation with ACORN? Yes, they're under lawsuit for fraud, get over it and move on. There's other things going on in the world. And it doesn't matter who Louis Farrakhan thinks is the messiah. This is the man who thinks that all people of color will be saved from the white man from UFOs.
Boostnitup Says:
Nov 18, 2009 - No getting over it... it affected the election. I believe they should be lined up on a wall and shot for TREASON. They shouldn't be going to jail... they should be shot.
Boostnitup Says:
Nov 18, 2009 - Yahweh killed Arabs, Philistines, and other Middle East enemy of his chosen Israelites because he is a devoutly racist God. Sounds like a green light to me. Get em Israel! Don't stop till you have wacked every one of them! Man, Woman, Child, and air breathing beast. Wipe away all recording of their existance to include their Mecca Rock.
