He claims that the universe isn't so great because we might be the only planet that supports life and most of the species are extinct. Your hypothesis postulates that God is causeless, so it's still nothing more than a middle man.

For an event to cause another event, it must precede it in time. ~15 billion years ago is the point (which is really more of a shady gray area) where space-time began, which means before that point/gray area there was no such thing as causality. Moreover, God as "eternal" doesn't really mean much, because time had no meaning and didn't exist before ~15 billion years ago.
