Oct 2, 2009 - People don't be fooled. Just because failure rate is low the chance of any rocket blowing up is high. this smallest problem can lead to catastrophe. All explosives are unstable and should be respected, understood and feared. Thinking your safe is when things go wrong.

Oct 2, 2009 - I re-read what you posted. The two largest (heaviest) ISS modules are Zarya and Zvezda, and they were delivered by Proton, not Shuttle. Also, when comparing, begin with the fact that the Russian space program has been suffering from devastating post-Soviet turmoil and pillage.
no12diefor Says:
Oct 2, 2009 - "...the Russians do not have an operating ISS crew return vehicle." Soyuz is the usual ISS long-term expedition crew return vehicle, permanently docked to the station up to 6 months. Shuttle comes only for short-term missions, replacing on average only 1 of 3 ISS crew members.

Oct 3, 2009 - typical American chauvinism... these rockets are based on 50 years old technology and they are safer than the space shuttle. what do you find cooler about space shuttle launch ? I remember seeing one of the first space shuttle launch (Columbia) when I was a kid in vacation in Florida and I don't see what you find so different...

Oct 4, 2009 - If you use rockets to launch cosmonauts, how do they return?
Silmacar Says:
Oct 5, 2009 - capsule, braked by parachutes.
TheOnlineCommunity Says:
Oct 5, 2009 - You can't possibly claim that this is just like a space shuttle launch. The space shuttle launch is much, much more spectacular. Soyuz is a much lower scale rocket and vehicle and is much less capable than the shuttle. Watch this and then watch a shuttle launch. The difference is completely obvious. And it's not even an "American" thing. People from all over the world love to watch the shuttle launches. But I guess you're too caught up in anti-American sentiment to appreciate it as well.
