Sep 10, 2009 - You have to think realistically about these things. It is likely filled with asbestos and lead paint. Cost of clean up and restoration is surely several times the actual value of the property and building. Who should pay for that? Taxpayers? Rich guy? Taxes are already plundered on useless, dated services, and the rich guy would nevr dump money into anything without some kind of return on his investment. It is indeed a damn shame, but what can really be done?

Sep 16, 2009 - exactly where was it located

KellyGreen5555 Says:

Sep 16, 2009 - What a shame to destroy something so beautiful that was there for so long.

RotisserieiJamie Says:

Sep 18, 2009 - Was this place haunted? After they tour it down was there like any hautnings? Just curious I love stuff like that.

zatoth13 Says:

Sep 20, 2009 - It cost over a million dollars a year to maintain it back when the widow lived in it-think of how much it would be now. It is sad though that it was demolished though.

Sep 21, 2009 - A shame that some kind of historical society couldn't save it. I'm glad you have pictures and that you had a chance to explore it before it went away.

rturnerful Says:

Sep 30, 2009 - If it's completion date was only that of 1921, then the house/estate, I think should have been saved and perhaps turned into a hotel of Grace and Charm...But oh no, we got have what some assholes calls progress!!!!!!!!!!!!!! by all means let's destroy an turn of the century grand place for townhouses!!!!

Oct 1, 2009 - Amen!

Speeddemon3 Says:

Oct 1, 2009 - What a magnificent waste. 6 decades is far from a decent life for such a building..

ruben18753 Says:

Oct 8, 2009 - terrible loss... but the current remains look like the ruins of greece and rome. makes me wonder what they looked like whole. history books always seem to imply there was never anything else but pillars and parts

wildchld97 Says:

Oct 15, 2009 - It's just sickening to see so much beauty gone forever. I hate seeing things like this destroyed. It's criminal to have things like this taken away from the public.

Oct 18, 2009 - cool!!!!

stewie919 Says:

Oct 20, 2009 - this should have been a listen building, its outrageous that something so beautiful was simply destroyed. it could have been turned into a museum or a country club retreat or something like that. Houses of that magnitude and architectural integirty should never be destroyed, they should be preserved. Now its probably just empty land divided into many tiny unused lots, how disgusting!

Ice123alex Says:

Oct 21, 2009 - so much history and artwork just tour down

ayorice Says:

Oct 24, 2009 - stop tearing down buildiongs like this there so awesome to see for history

grumpypunkin Says:

Oct 26, 2009 - I agree.. These buildings should be saved and cherished for the treasures that they are. I'm glad Chicago has begun to realize the true treasure that old buildings are, and are no longer tearing them down, but restoring them.

missmarie273 Says:

Oct 27, 2009 - What a complete waste of all the magnificent architecture and fabulous art work.

doucefrance28 Says:

Oct 27, 2009 - It grieves me to no end how little appreciation this country has for its architectural wonders like Whitemarsh, like Penn Station in New York. Indeed we, as a civilization, are made less when these works of profound architectural splendor are destroyed. Thank you for this wonderful video.

sam29232 Says:

Oct 29, 2009 - You got to explore that place when you were a kid. I am soooo jealous!

beretta1342000 Says:

Oct 30, 2009 - How beautiful and haunting! Something like that should have been saved and turned into a hotel or something like that. That is just beautiful. I could image what it looked like all those years ago.

rem042 Says:

Oct 31, 2009 - yea what was the point of razing it for town homes if they weren't even built on it's footprint just on the surrounding land?

OLIVIAUSSIE Says:

Nov 6, 2009 - BOY YOU SAID IT. SO SAD.

empressoffrance Says:

Nov 13, 2009 - Whitemarsh Hall sounds haunting. U cannot find ppl who do that type of art work anymore. What stories could be told about it and its inhabitants.
