There was simply an overwhelming competitive level back then. A fighter will learn and adapt, tyson was a hard worker, he could've easily learned a bit of mma; just enough to stay on his feet... and have easily been the best mma fighter in history :) Why? Because he was a really hard worker he or any great boxer adapted to their apponents style.

A lot of these mma fighters are somewhat average joes, who started out in one sport, didn't work for them and decides that they want to get into mma. Guys like Le, Machida, A Silva, they have been martial artist their whole life. A great stand up fighter, or fighter in general reads his opponent. They watch for tendencies, mistakes that their opponent often makes, and time their punches. Which is why silva, machida, le are so dominant in the stand up.
