May 20, 2009 - Very interesting. Great description of how the military mind works. Watching people discuss politics and religion (I visibly do that myself) it is not only how the military mind works, it is how many if not the majority of human minds work. Never seen a communist admit a good point in the view of a conservative. And vice versa. Never talked to a Muslim admitting that there is a sinister side of Islam. And Christians would admit maybe only that the church committed crimes "in the middle ages".

Jun 6, 2009 - While Professor Zinn is dead on correct regarding his comments on war and empire, his criticism of the industrialism is too simplistic. What does Mr Zinn think life was like for the vast majority of humanity before the Industrial Revolution. Did not 12 year girls work on the farm? Why did so many voluntary go to work in the factories if conditions were so bad? Indeed, it was industrialism in the West which allowed for eradication of child labor. What about labor union violence?

Jun 14, 2009 - Child labor wasn't erdicated, not to my knowledge. As for Union violence, yes it's obvious. If you ever had any dealings with a labor union, you know they are crooked. I personally don't think it was as bad as factory conditions. I think they went to the factories for the same reason people come to America, namely they think, or at least they are promised, that life will be better. I think many of them, retrospectively, would comment that their expectations were not what they expected.
