Sep 21, 2009 - oh my god, she's fucking terrible. she doesn't understand this character at ALL: carol is not one for confrontation, and then the professor pushes her to confrontation at the end of the play. THEY ARE PLAYING THE END OF THE PLAY! and bill pullman is awful in this role as well. they should not have cast these two in oleanna. all they are doing is degrading mamet's masterpiece.

Sep 26, 2009 - Oh, tosh, epk921. I think they're brilliant. This is one of the best pairings I've seen for Oleanna, I think they do a wonderful job. And they have the dialogue exactly right. Most versions I've seen, I groan, because the dialogue sounds so fake. But Julia Stiles and Bill Pullman have it down to an art, and it sounds so natural.
epk921 Says:
Sep 26, 2009 - Yes, they may have the dialog down, but doing that is simply memorizing the script. And memorization comes before the rehearsal process really even begins. I have worked extensively on this play, and I know for a fact that the character of Carol is a lot of what drives this scene. And her biggest obstacle in doing so is her extreme aversion to conflict - and Julia Stiles really disregarded this obstacle. Because of that, Bill Pullman can't possibly play the part of the professor correctly.
InvisibleAutoMail Says:
Sep 29, 2009 - I don't mean they have the words memorised. I mean it sounds like a real conversation, unlike the stilted crap I've seen from other actors. And they have the right emotion behind the words. I'm working on this play currently and came on YouTube to see some examples. This is the only video I've seen that actually makes me see how the lines fit together and make up a proper play.

Oct 11, 2009 - Saw this last night. I thought she was amazing - this video does not do her justice - but thought he was WAY too strung out. I saw him in The Goat a few years back and thought the exact same thing. Most people loved him, so he must be doing something right. His part of the fight scene was very mechanical and I never got the feeling that she was in danger. He's GOT to work on that! The audience should be holding their collective breath in that moment.

Oct 22, 2009 - what happens after that fighthing scene? I am dying to know. Please, someone tell me!

Nov 24, 2009 - I'm assuming he gets fired. Whether or not that was Carol's ulterior motive (as her original intent was for his book to be banned.). If I remember the story correctly (it's been a while since I last saw the film version) if he agreed to having his book removed from the classroom, she would drop the sexual harassment charge. After he beat Carol up, I think he realizes he only needed to give in to her demands, and everything would've been okay, but then realizes it's all over (again, I'm not sure)
