Oct 4, 2009 - warsaw you are right - be on the lookout for an updated peter commercial playing over this years holidays.. it was the most effective commercial pg had ever run, and now under new ownership with the JM Smucker company, the folgers brand has recently been taping an updated version for a 2009 holiday launch!
chuckcollins Says:
Oct 4, 2009 - Do you work for Smucker's or can you please direct us to a link that details this wonderful development?
WCWite Says:
Oct 5, 2009 - When I was a little kid this always melted my heart do they still play it around Christmas?

Oct 6, 2009 - I just saw the Irish dancer's morning commercial on The Weather Channel, which seems to be the home for such commercials. It blew me away for a moment, because it was such an old commercial! I'll post something up if I happen to DVR a segment that included it.

Oct 6, 2009 - I had forgotten about this ad. Thanks for posting it. The thing that always stood out to me about this ad was that it was built entirely of commercial artifice: a warm car still has iced over windows; Peter pours the coffee right in front of his face; Peter greets mom with a hug, but dad with an antiseptic handshake lest we Americans be confronted with the idea that men could hug each other. I hope in the update they use Greg Wrangler (Peter) to play the dad...and lose the artifice.
chuckcollins Says:
Oct 10, 2009 - It's not entirely impossible that "Father" is actually Peter's step-father. I would not find it unlikely that, while he would respect him enough to give a handshake, perhaps the circumstances of his mother's remarriage left Peter with less-than-huggable feelings towards his step-father.

Oct 12, 2009 - You know it's Christmas when they start playing this commercial on TV.
lacouerfairy Says:
Oct 12, 2009 - Lol, true. But I'm blessed to have a family like this. There ARE still families out there that love eeach other and make efforts to get together for the holidays. I think they should make more commercials like this to emphasize the importance of family, especially around the holidays.

Oct 16, 2009 - The best commercial - EVER!!! I used to wait for it every Thanksgiving morning while making breakfast for my family. It kicked off the holiday season for me, not to mention made me smile on those holidays that I couldn't make it back home myself. It was always comforting somehow to know that if I couldn't make it home, that Peter could. It's nice to hear they are updating it but I hope they will run it with the classic, too. May Peter always make it home for the holidays! ♥

Oct 23, 2009 - how old id this commercial? I swear to God they aired this last year. This got to be 20 years old right? There are a very few commercial classics and this is one of them. Rock on.

Oct 25, 2009 - This is one of my favorite commercials!!!
JasonL77 Says:
Oct 26, 2009 - How about they update this commercial as a soldder comeing home from Iraq?
chuckcollins Says:
Oct 26, 2009 - No. Because it would offend the families of those in Afghanistan. And he can't be in any particular branch either for fear of offending the members of one of the others.
JasonL77 Says:
Oct 26, 2009 - Yeah, I guess you're right.

Oct 28, 2009 - this is why i love you tube, for videos like this, it aired in 1985, one of my favorite christmas commercial, i love the holidays
Sandguy99 Says:
Oct 31, 2009 - Curious. I have heard that this ad first aired in 1982, 1884 and 1985. Does anyone know exactly was the first holiday season it ran?
chuckcollins Says:
Oct 31, 2009 - I don't know. I wasn't alive back then. ;) But I've also heard that the ad agency, Cunningham Walsh, supposedly shot it in 1986. And yes, they STILL get residuals for every time it's shown!
