Nov 15, 2009 - Rock n' roll, America, and her president isn't just black or just white. Life is usually never just black or white. American music and culture, artist like Bob Dylan and James Brown, as well as others are great testaments to progress. Sure black artist and black Americans in general have been victims of injustice and unfairness. So hasn't many artist and people of all races been victims of big money exploiting people. I don't define rock n' roll in terms of race. For me, it's more about class.

BlackMusicHippies Says:

Nov 15, 2009 - One of the best sounds I've ever heard:)

BlackMusicHippies Says:

Nov 15, 2009 - This song was based on traditional gospel song: "This Train(Is Bound For Glory)".

Sweetsummur Says:

Nov 15, 2009 - Well damn it, maybe Elvis wasn't sued, but he damn well shoulda been LOL. In those days most black artists didn't litigate because as 2nd class citizens, they were not empowered to do so.

Sweetsummur Says:

Nov 15, 2009 - Having a love and appreciation for certain forms of music is only human, but to blatantly steal a persons song, without publicly giving them the credit, and profiting from it is the ultimate demonstration of the utter lack of respect given blacks, and low down business dealing by the artists and record companies alike who profited from racism and segregation

ShaneWoodbury Says:

Nov 15, 2009 - First of all, you act as if Elvis went into the recording studio and covered this song so he could then release it and have a big hit and make millions. Elvis only used this song as a live number on stage. He never recorded this in a studio or had a hit with it. Second of all, not all black artist were victims of exploitation. Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Coltrane, Nat King Cole, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr, and others were very successful and smart

ShaneWoodbury Says:

Nov 15, 2009 - You know at some point in your life, you will no longer want to define black people as those who were discriminated against. The victim mentality does more harm than good in the end. Before Elvis became famous, he and his parents lived in a Memphis housing project, where black families were also housed. When your poor, it's not always race that's the difference. The difference is only between the haves and the haves not. Elvis, like many black people had nothing and was very poor.

ShaneWoodbury Says:

Nov 15, 2009 - You know I think alot of you are comfrontable with demonizing Elvis Presley for what many record companies did to many (but not all) black artist. Elvis shouldn't be your convenient dart board for white exploitation of black artist. Elvis was successful not only because of blues covers, but also love songs, and his looks. "Are You Lonesome Tonight" or "Teddy Bear" isn't black music. Elvis came from poor roots, and he used his voice to escape poverty, just like many black artist did.

IAMSAM1234567890 Says:

Nov 17, 2009 - i think it was wrong the way Elvis took this song it's only good on Mr. Walter yes indeed.Elvis is a racist punk he once said "all a black man can do me is carry my bags".They call him the The king of rock n' roll more like the racist thief of rock

ShaneWoodbury Says:

Nov 17, 2009 - That was a rumor that "Jet" Magizine already confirmed as just a rumor. Google it. There is also a video here on YT about that rumor. All you Elvis haters have no facts to back up your hateful rhetoric. Please explain to me why James Brown.....the Godfather of Soul, the man who sang...."Say it Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud"......James Brown himself honored Elvis Presley by attending his funeral. Why would James Brown honor a racist?

JabberOff Says:

Nov 17, 2009 - Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino and Big Joe Turner should all get their dues. All four blow Elvis out of the water. But just as it's wrong to disregard black contributions to the form, it's also wrong to deny white performers their rightful credit. Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash deserve credit as well. White non-musicians also played an extremely important role in the popularization of the form. Leonard Chess and Alan Freed immediately come to mind.

momof4jays Says:

Nov 18, 2009 - Elvis may have grown up poor, but he was able to perform where he wanted to and when he wanted to. He was able to walk through the front door of the hotel and get a decent room. Many blacks were spat on, turned away, their money was stolen, couldn't eat where their counterparts ate. Maybe you should check the other comments Elvis made about blacks. Besides Elvis was corny.

ShaneWoodbury Says:

Nov 18, 2009 - There is no historical evidence of Elvis actually saying anything racist in his whole life. Again, "Jet Magazine" confirmed those comments as just rumors that can't be proven. My point being that you can't blame Elvis or all white people for the way black people were treated back in the day. If one black person did something negative towards me....I wouldn't then say or think that's how all black act or are.

ShaneWoodbury Says:

Nov 18, 2009 - You know that argument isn't so effective after the civil rights movement and the election of president Barack Obama. I'm not suggesting that racism in America doesn't exist anymore. I am suggesting that enormous advances have been made, and black people in America today are free to succede or free to fail. Blaming the evil white man is becoming more and more of just an excuse for personal failure. Now is a time for self-responsibility, and not blaming the past.

TubeGunner Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - Shane, no need defending The King to these clueless racists and their lies. Isn't it obvious they are uneducated? They are clueless about Elvis on every level. Elvis never stole shit, and his influences came from MANY musical styles which made up his own totally timeless original style. Plus, MANY black artists covered white songs and had huge hits with them, from Ray Charles to Nat Cole to Ella to Arethra to Wilson Pickett to Ike and Tina and dozens of others. Forget these racist fools here.

TubeGunner Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - Elvis was NEVER sued for ANY song in his entire lifetime, and he NEVER failed to give credit to any "black" song he did cover. He also had countless black friends in and out of the entertainment business, and they all loved him and thought he was incredible, including all of his black musical peers of his time, and even Muhammed Ali. Elvis' big "hits" were NEVER black songs, His covers of black songs were album tracks or just live versions. The stupidity here is of mammoth porportions.

bri4den Says:

Nov 20, 2009 - momof4jays, as I cannot speak from experience what horrific things this world does to one another, but stand proud and be proud, you now have a black president!! Big step forward, and I hope many more to come. You know that not all white people are evil, well I can only speak from a Canadian perspective. Peace Out Denni, Vancouver Island

momof4jays Says:

Nov 21, 2009 - I am proud. I was commenting on a specific comment. Not meant towards a race issue actually. I know all white people aren't evil. I'm white.

kimnjer6873 Says:

Nov 21, 2009 - Im so sick and tired of hearing racist stuff if you disagree with this president , to they stole the songs sung by black prerformers stop with the stupidity and get over yourself Elvis did not steal this this song it was and I'll say it not for the last time he did this song live and only live it was recorded but only live he never cut a record, and since we are being so picky lets pick on ike and tina for stealing credence clear water revivals song of proud mary a southern rock band song

kimnjer6873 Says:

Nov 21, 2009 - and by the way i like little walters version better

bigdog0800 Says:

Nov 21, 2009 - yeah no white people stole any songs from lil richard or chuck berry either right. come on man willie dixon made millions off suing for the rights to songs from everyone from led zepplin to the beach boys. You live in a fantasy world. I would love to come visit but I know it doesnt exist. Do you??

bigdog0800 Says:

Nov 21, 2009 - you people are living in a dream world its a joke to stand hear and say that that didnt happen an absolute joke just man up and accept it please you make oyurself seem foolish and just plain stupid. But ai am sure thats what you are so what can you do...jokers what jokers we have hear.

kimnjer6873 Says:

Nov 21, 2009 - listen fucknuts, I never said that that kind of thing never did happen, I was commenting on elvis in that song. what willie dixon sued for was back royalties that was due him for the songs that he wrote. Pull your head out of your ass and read more about it before you make a comment on what someone else says. Maybe you should come out of YOUR fantasy world. not every white person is a fucking racist.

blakmoon71 Says:

Nov 23, 2009 - Elvis "big hits" were NEVER Black songs?! Hound Dog was Big Mama Thorton is one I can think of.
