One of the groups of believers in an invisible sky daddy will sabotage it. The results of the cable falling to earth would be catastrophic. If we ever grow up, a space elevator is a possibility. The smallest self-replicating cell evolution can come up with is a bacterium. The smallest replicating object that co-opts human cells is the virus. Both evolve because they don't have sufficient error detection in replication. Extra error detection means bigger. Probably too big to be of any use.
