Sep 7, 2009 - I would agree with what you're saying. Mike's a player, but that tone can't take me anyplace.

emmoiv Says:

Sep 8, 2009 - Hey, I'm not a hater, and Mike Stern's a hell of a player . . . such a good player that it makes it all the more painful to me to have to hear everything he plays through that same awful (in my opinion) chorus / echoey effect. I don't hate effects but come on, the same one all the time?

Sep 10, 2009 - My dad says this is jarring... I kinda like it... Basically every piece I write of jazz, he has to always mention that it is jarring...

Sep 12, 2009 - His tele was made by some guy in Boston and has a '50s Broadcaster neck.

Sep 14, 2009 - Great playing. But I can't stand that sound.

Semach4444 Says:

Sep 16, 2009 - I agree. Unfortunately, I'm a tone-snob, and that sound ruins the beautiful notes he's playing. Just my opinion.

junka22 Says:

Sep 21, 2009 - to each his own. It's not my favourite tone either, but I can live with it :)

simgeej Says:

Sep 28, 2009 - i see what you mean, but without that tone he is just another guy that plays fusion/ jazz. Some guys when you listen to you have to really listen to them to tell who they are, Stern you can tell instantly.

cooks95 Says:

Sep 28, 2009 - I see him at the 55 Bar in NYC - for $10 if you can believe it! - and the sound was the first thing I noticed. The band actually out shined him; of course they were great players, but that wasn't the reason. It was that tone- it just didn't mix well with the other instruments. I think he does it because he's playing a solid body guitar -and useds that effect to compensate for the lack of that fuller acoustic sound hollow body jazz players get guys get.

Sep 28, 2009 - Its good to beable to create your own tone and sound without having any effects and just an amp and your fingers mostly your fingers

Nov 3, 2009 - Mike's a sweet guy and all but after listening to several Frank Gambale clips, I have been given divine perspective.

jonigrau Says:

Nov 18, 2009 - agony for my ears

Marine475 Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - He used to play Fender Telecaster but then Yamaha signed contract with him and they make sth. called Yamaha Pacifica 1511 MS, though I once asked friend luthier about it and he said that it's mass produced piece of crap and if I want the real thing I should by old telecaster and mod it with same pickups that stern uses. The distinctive sound however comes from old yamaha multi effect.

Aldren88 Says:

Nov 24, 2009 - i dont know why exactly, but i don't like this!
