But that doesn't mean I wont try every other option first. As for the other ten commandments, the first 4 I suppose non religious people could ignore as it says basically not to worship any type of idol or God. And the other 6 are quite reasonable in my opinion.

In democracies (even representative ones), everything is decided with a 50%+1 vote That means your "right of free speech" can be taken away by a simple vote. That sucks for minorities for like blacks or asians. In a Republic it's the laws that rule. In the case of the US that law is the U.S. Constitution which reigns supreme above all (even the majority or the Congress or president). Your right of free speech can not be taken away.
