Nov 17, 2009 - I wouldn't say to avoid entertainment entirely. But put a time limit on it. Movies are better than TV, at least they end. A few winters ago learned Spanish. I spent 3-4 hours a day on it and was pretty fluent within 3 months. When I told coworkers how much time I spent every day, they acted like I was crazy. But these same "adults" spend three hours a day playing Grand Theft Auto. Accomplishing anything worthwhile takes time. Or we can just give up and watch Dancing With the Stars.

Nov 18, 2009 - I think it depends on how you use media. Film and video games are modern forms of art and part of out culture. "Entertainment" is just a derogatory term for simplistic art. But good art has had a positive influence on people's lives throughout history. I think appreciating cultural products, no matter if novels, art or games, is very important and they shouldn't be shrugged of as braindead entertainment. Whether one watches Dancing with the Stars or a complex movie makes a tremendous difference.
