Nov 19, 2009 - ..not saying that jimi meant it like this but my interpretation of this masterpiece is that the star spangled banner was written about a war where there was killing rape and other atrocities like any other war..so he just made it sound like war..i personally think that those who sing the national anthem in the way that you speak of are incorrect... just my opinion

It's the totally unorthodox sounds that make it so powerful; he stepped outside the realms of traditional guitar playing to capture the horror of war. Yes, it's abrasive and confrontational but that was the whole point. If it was a pleasant, flowing melody then the impact would be no where near as profound.
