Oct 20, 2009 - I am just confused coz on your video "argument essay cleanup (about IT and internet), the question/task was "form an opinion..." but the essay that you have presented was an argument based. kindly please clarify..
ineedyourhelp100 Says:
Oct 20, 2009 - hi ryan! how would one know whether the ielts essay topic or question is an argument or an opinion based? kindly give an example. some of these are "to what extent do you agree or disagree" "discuss the issue and give you opinion" "what are the adv and disadv," "do you agree or disagree" and the like. im really just confused. thanks in advance and God bless you!

EnglishRyan Says:
Oct 20, 2009 - Hello ineedyourhelp100, The majority of essay questions you'll see will have a single instruction sentence (usually the last sentence). It is important you read this sentence in its entirety and understand its meaning completely. Just because this sentence has the word 'opinion' does not mean that you should automatically write a discussion essay. Take a look at this example: "Form and opinion and support it with evidence." This instruction sentence is asking us to create and support ...
EnglishRyan Says:
Oct 20, 2009 - ... a single argument. It is not asking us to analyze all viewpoints or to discuss both sides of a point of view. Now, let's look at this one: "Analyze this opinion from multiple points of view." Here the instruction sentence is making it clear that we must take all sides of the argument presented, critique them and then come to a reasoned conclusion of our own.
ineedyourhelp100 Says:
Oct 21, 2009 - thanks. things are quite clearer now. just one last clarification. if the task or question is "to what extent do you argree or disagree" should i still present both sides of the argument and on my conclusion i will sight my opinion? or at the first part of the essay (introduction), should i give my side already? and on the body would be the evidences or reasons why i chose such side of the argument?
ineedyourhelp100 Says:
Oct 21, 2009 - would there be a difference in the essay outline or format if the question is "do you agree or disagree" and "to what extent do you agree or disagree"? or same approach could be used? thanks so much ryan! God bless you!
