I smack the strings just as you demonstrated, but it doesn't sound anywhere near as strong. Is it not damaging to the strings if you hit them too hard (to the point where they almost touch the body of the guitar)?

Jun 16, 2009 - its not so much a force thing. its a hard thing to get used to. mainly just try to cover all the strings you hit. like he said, it sounds like a chop but youre not trying to break it or anything. it just takes time haha

Jun 17, 2009 - Thanks! Also, forgot to mention I'm using a classical guitar.. I know most of the stuff he teaches is meant for acoustic but for the moment it just seems much easier for me to play on the wide neck of a classical guitar. This might be the reason why it's so difficult for me to get the percussive sound he's demonstrating in this video. I expect this to be easier when I move on to steel strings.
