Nov 19, 2009 - May I suggest that we are overthinking the re-tunings? It's just another effect, that's all. It has its own charm. It creates a smooth and uniform transition between the initial and terminal notes, more uniform than can be achieved by sliding (even on a fretless bass). I think some musicians have a purist approach and others view their instruments as collections of limited gimmicks out of which they try to squeeze as much variety as possible in service of the music itself. I enjoy that approach.
