Look at some statistics, polls and so on, all of it points in the same direction. Being an atheist is so difficult in the US that a lot of atheists are in the closet! The UK has its own church, Finland has an offical religion, Malta has an official religion, etc (I don't know much about it overall, I just happen to know those). Being an atheist isn't hard in the USA. Most people claim to be religious in some way, but most aren't.
